Sea Gulls soar over Eagles to remain perfect in CAC play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 20 Salisbury University softball team remains perfect in Capital Athletic Conference play after sweeping the University of Mary Washington in Saturday's doubleheader. The first game was decided in five innings, 8-0, while the second game went to the Gulls 7-2.

Salisbury (25-5, 8-0 CAC) scored two runs in the first inning of game one to take the lead off an Eagle error and then added another in the second inning off the bat of junior Sarah Alpaugh for a 3-0 lead.

Senior pitcher Erika Brittingham (14-3) worked quickly in the circle allowing only one hit and striking out six.

The Sea Gulls scored five runs off six hits in the fifth inning to bring the game to an early close. With bases loaded, junior Lindsay McCabe singled to first base as the Eagles attempted to throw Brittingham out at home plate but an error gave SU the 4-0 edge and kept the bases full. Junior Lindsay Brown then doubled to left center plating junior Hannah Mills, sophomore Molly Gigioli and McCabe. The last run of the inning was scored by sophomore Angelia McDowell as classmate Harley Hill singled to left field.

Freshman hurler Rachel Johnson (10-2) took the circle for game two, not allowing a hit in the first six innings before giving up two runs on five hits in the seventh. The Preston, Md., native struck out a career-high 14 batters.

Salisbury scored at least one run in five of the seven innings, while Mills hit her ninth home run of the year in the top of the third inning, a two-run shot, giving the Sea Gulls a 3-0 lead.

Four additional runs were scored by the Sea Gulls before Mary Washington (17-15, 6-2 CAC) put two runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. The scoring deficit was too large to overcome as Salisbury won its 15th consecutive game, 7-2.

Junior Michelle Gravdahl went 4-for-6, scoring once, while senior Casey Zaino went 3-for-7 with two RBIs on the day.

The Sea Gulls will return to CAC action on Tuesday, April 10, as they take on Wesley College at the SU Softball field. The doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m.
