Salisbury opens Buttermaker Tournament with two wins

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Salisbury University volleyball team started the Buttermaker Tournament, hosted by Muhlenberg College, with a pair of wins on Friday. The Sea Gulls took their first match of the day, 3-1, against Moravian College before taking down Neumann University by the same score.

Salisbury will advance to a pool of the three teams who won their pool on Friday. All three teams enter Saturday's play unbeaten.

The Sea Gulls opened up a 2-0 lead in their first match of the day, beating Moravian 25-15 and 25-23 in the first two sets before the Greyhounds grabbed the third, 25-20. But Salisbury would finish off the match, in impressive fashion, 25-18.

Senior Chelsea Glowacki and freshman Ashlyn Tapley led the way with 11 kills apiece in the match. Glowacki did so on just 18 attempts while adding 11 digs and nine block assists, one shy of her career high, set in 2010 at St. Mary's (Md.) College.

Tapley was good for a team-best 19 digs and two block assists in the victory.

Senior setter Carley Todd matched her career high with six blocks (one solo and five assisted) while notching 26 assists as well. Freshman Lindsay Tapley added nine assists.

Salisbury's defense was on point, registering 17 blocks as a team and picking up 71 digs, allowing the Greyhounds to hit just .110 in the match. Sophomore Mattie Smith had a career-high four blocks while senior Kelly Vieira had 11 digs.

Salisbury finished the day with a four-set win against Neumann. Salisbury opened with a 25-20 win before the Knights tied things up with a 25-22 win in the second set. But the Sea Gulls (6-1) would pull away with lopsided 25-11 and 25-16 wins to close out the match.

The Sea Gulls will take on the host, Muhlenberg, a 10 a.m., and will play Elizabethtown College at noon.
