Salisbury wins first match of Sea Gull Classic; down Eagles, 3-1

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team ran its Capital Athletic Conference record to 2-1 on Friday night, defeating University of Mary Washington, 3-1 (25-11, 25-20, 17-25, 25-13), on the first day of the Sea Gull Classic tournament at Maggs Physical Activity Center.

The Sea Gulls took control early in the first set, jumping out to an eight-point lead with a 10-2 run. The team took a 3-1 lead on a kill from junior Mattie Smith, before junior Julie Poston registered three kills in the remainder of the run.

SU (19-3) held a comfortable lead for the rest of the set, eventually reaching the 14-point margin-of-victory.

Kills by freshman Katie Stouffer accounted for Salisbury's final three points, as the Frederick, Md., native tallied five in the set.

Stouffer led the team in the match with 13 kills and was the only Gull to reach double-digits.

Despite falling into an 8-5 deficit early in the second set, two kills from Stouffer and one from Poston helped the Gulls tie the set, 9-9.

The Eagles grew their lead back to 12-9, but the Sea Gulls would eventually gain the lead for good with a 12-3 run.

Smith and junior Kirby Buttry both tallied kills, while junior Michelle Meehan registered two service aces and senior Jess Tallant added another during the run.

Salisbury took the second set to gain a 2-0 advantage, but Mary Washington would force a fourth set by taking the third set. The Gulls fell in an 11-5 hole in the game and was unable to rebound.

The Sea Gulls came out strong in the fourth set, again grabbing an early lead, as kills from junior Nikki Binetti and senior Tam Weems allowed the team to take a 3-0 lead, before the Eagles would score.

Three kills by Stouffer and two by Smith kept the Gulls going and helped the team go up by double digits, 14-4.

The Salisbury lead would not fall below 10 for the rest of the set, and a kill from Poston capped the win.

Poston, Smith, Binetti and Weems all gathered seven kills; sophomore Kacey Franz (22 assists) and freshman Gretchen Vandermeer (20 assists) handled the setting, while Meehan led with 15 digs.

The Sea Gulls open the second day of Sea Gull Classic action on Saturday, hosting Bridgewater (Va.) College at Maggs PAC at 10 a.m.
