Weems, Tallant honored on senior day as Sea Gulls down Bobcats in 'Dig Pink' match

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team completed is three-game home stand without losing a set with another 3-0 victory, defeating Frostburg State University 25-14, 25-9, 25-13 at Maggs Physical Activities Center on Saturday afternoon, as the Sea Gulls celebrated senior day and hosted their "Dig Pink" match.

Before the match, SU honored defensive specialist Jess Tallant and middle hitter Tam Weems in their final regular-season home match. In three years with the program, the duo compiled a 94-12 record, two Capital Athletic Conference championships and two NCAA tournament appearances.

Frostburg took an early 5-2 lead, but a streak of four-straight kills by junior Mattie Smith, freshman Katie Stouffer, Weems and junior Kirby Buttry gave Salisbury the 6-5 lead.

Smith led the team with 10 kills on the day, while Weems (seven kills) and Buttry (six kills) both registered .850-plus attack percentages to lead the Gulls' that tallied six or more attacks; Weems led hitting .875, while Buttry finished hitting .857.

With the one-point lead, the Sea Gulls rode an 8-4 run to grow its advantage, as Buttry and Stouffer each grabbed kills and Tallant, who led with five service aces in the match, hit two.

Smith and Stouffer, who led the set with four kills, both grabbed two more in the frame as SU (25-4, 5-1 CAC) took the 1-0 lead in the match.

Sparked by an opening kill by junior Julie Poston, the Gulls opened on a 4-1 run in the second set. Frostburg would cut the lead to 5-4, but 12-2 run gave Salisbury a commanding lead in the game.

Weems led with two kills in the run and four kills in the set; she closed the set with her final kill to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead.

Salisbury's momentum continued into the third set, as three kills from Smith, two kills from Buttry and service aces from Tallant and Weems gave SU an early 12-4 lead.

The Bobcats put a run together to cut the lead to 13-7, but the Sea Gull closed the match on a 12-5 surge, capped by a service ace by freshman Gina Fischetti.

Stouffer finished second, tied with Weems, on the day with seven kills, while freshman Gretchen Vandermeer had a team-high 20 assists, and junior Michelle Meehan led with 10 digs.

Entering the match with a $500 goal for their "Dig Pink" effort, the Sea Gulls raised over $1,800 to help the fight against breast cancer.

Salisbury will take to the road on Wednesday for a CAC match against Wesley College; the contest is set for 7 p.m.
