Salisbury takes sixth CAC match, defeating Wesley in three sets

Box Score

DOVER, Del. - The Salisbury University volleyball team earned a win on the road on Wednesday night, defeating Capital Athletic Conference-foe Wesley College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-15), as the Gulls have won their last 12 sets.

The win clinches the number-two seed in next week's CAC tournament, a first-round bye and a home game in the semifinal round.

The Sea Gulls got right down to business, as senior Jess Tallant opened the first set with a service ace, one of three on the night, and sparked a 7-0 run to open the set.

Juniors, Mattie Smith and Nikki Binetti, both tallied kills in the run, which included a block by Binetti and junior Julie Poston and three Wolverine attack errors.

Smith, who led the Gulls with 10 kills on the night, added three more, while freshman Katie Stouffer registered two, allowing Salisbury to push its first-set lead to 16-5.

SU (26-4, 6-1 CAC) took a 1-0 lead in the match as a block by Smith and senior Tam Weems was sandwiched by two kills from junior Kirby Buttry to close the first set.

Weems and Smith powered Salisbury in the opening of the second set with three kills each, and freshman Gretchen Vandermeer added a service ace, as the Gulls grabbed an early 12-2 lead.

As the Sea Gulls continued to hold their lead, Stouffer led the way with three kills, allowing SU to have a late 22-11 advantage.

Despite a late push by Wesley to cut the lead to 24-17, Buttry would end the second set with another kill.

Errors continued to plague the Wolverines, allowing the Sea Gulls to build a 5-0 margin in the third set, and Stouffer, Buttry and Poston all tallied kills to push the lead to 10-3.

Poston and Buttry would each grab two more kills, helping to increase SU's lead to 20-15; the Sea Gulls would ride a 5-0 closing run to victory, as a Smith kill, followed by three more Wesley errors, allowed Stouffer to end the match with her final kill.

Stouffer ended the night second on the team with seven kills, Vandermeer led with 17 assists and junior Michelle Meehan finished with 20 digs.

Salisbury now looks forward to a tri-match on Saturday at York (Pa.) College, as the Gulls are scheduled to take on the Spartans at 1 p.m., and Franklin and Marshall College at 3 p.m.
