Sea Gulls strike first but fall short to CNU, 3-1

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team's run to a third-consecutive Capital Athletic Conference championship game ended Wednesday evening, falling in the semifinal round to top-seeded Christopher Newport University, 3-1, at Captains Field.

Salisbury (10-6-4) put a tally on the scoreboard first but the Captains fought back and eventually overtook the Sea Gulls.

Christopher Newport (14-3-1) started the game out with an offensive attack but was turned away Sea Gull junior goalie Michelle Conrad. The Captains fired off the first three shots of the game but were denied by the Smithtown, N.Y., native. When the Sea Gulls advanced the ball into their offensive zone, they put home the first chance they had.

Freshman Marissa Walker made Salisbury's first shot on goal count, beating Captain goalie Haley Casanova to give the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead 12:17 into the contest. Walker took a pass from sophomore Samantha Beck, who cleared the ball into the Sea Gull offensive zone from midfield, onto the foot of Walker. The Baldwin, Md., native settled the ball just inside the 18-yard box and ripped a shot into the right corner of the net.

Christopher Newport would answer back just over five minutes later with a goal when Joy Piirto netted an unassisted goal. The Captains would take the lead at the 28:44 mark with a goal by Sam Rabinek, assisted by Lindsay Mondloch.

The Captains' Bupe Okeowo netted the lone goal of the second half.

The Captains outshot the Sea Gulls 8-4 in the first half and 15-7 for the contest.

Conrad played the first half and made four saves. Freshman Alesha Seifert entered the game at halftime and turned away two Captain shots during her time minding the net.
