Quartet leads SU to 20-10 win over Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – The No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team completed its weekend trip through the commonwealth of Virginia with a 20-10 win over Roanoke College Sunday afternoon. The Sea Gulls featured a balanced attack, with four players netting three goals each.

Senior Lauren Feusahrens and freshman Samantha Duranti led the Salisbury (4-0) attack, each with three goals and an assist. Senior Maggie Roundy and junior Shelby Nemecek each added a hat trick for the Sea Gulls. Those totals set new career bests for goals and points for Duranti, and the three goals by Roundy matches her career high as well.

That game was ultimately decided in the first half, with the Sea Gulls holding a decided advantage over Roanoke (0-3) on the scoreboard and statsheet at the break. Salisbury outshot the Maroons 21-6 and committed six fewer turnovers, which contributed to a 15-5 Sea Gull lead at halftime.

Senior Katie Bollhorst got Salisbury on the board just 65 seconds into the contest, a lead the Sea Gulls would not relinquish. Just over a minute later Feusahrens netted her first of the contest, and the lead was pushed to 3-0 just 14 seconds after that by junior Shannon Carta.

Roanoke's Darragh Evarts stopped the initial run with the first of her game-high four goals, but Salisbury answered with goals by Feusahrens and sophomore Bethany Baer. After a second Roanoke goal, and then trading marks on the scoreboard to bring the game to 6-3, the Sea Gulls went on a 5-0 run during the middle of the first half to take control of the contest. After Duranti scored her second goal with 14:35 remaining in the first half to bring the game to 11-3, Roanoke scored a goal, followed by two Salisbury goals and that was repeated again to cap the first half scoring.

The second half saw goals scored in bunches by both sides, with Roanoke getting the first two goals, matched by the Sea Gulls, the Maroons getting the final three goals of their afternoon, again matched by Salisbury to end the contest. As part of the final 3-0 run for Salisbury, freshman Melissa Webster netted the first goal of her career.

Junior Ashton Wheatley was in net for the first 50:29 of the contest, stopping three Roanoke shots to pick up the win between the pipes. Sophomore Alyssa Harmke finished the contest in net, stopping the only shot she faced.

For Roanoke, Allison Bonanno had a game-high seven points, netting two goals and handing out five assists.

The Sea Gulls will next be in action this Wednesday, March 13 against No. 3 State University of New York at Cortland. That game will be played in Lancaster, Pa., on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College and is scheduled to begin at noon.
