Softball splits final games of Sea Gull Classic

| Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University softball team split its final games of the Sea Gull Classic as the Sea Gulls defeated Shenandoah University 9-1 in five innings before falling to Eastern Mennonite University, in the teams' third meeting of the season, 6-1.

Salisbury (11-1) and the Hornets would play two innings of scoreless softball before Salisbury earned two runs in the top of the third and Shenandoah came within one, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning.

The Sea Gulls would explode offensively in the fourth, scoring seven runs off three hits, to take a commanding 9-1 lead over the Hornets.

Senior outfielder Lindsay McCabe would lead the inning off with a walk before a Hornet error allowed senior second baseman Carly Read to reach first safely and then advance to second as McCabe touched home.

Junior first baseman Harley Hill would then send a single through the right side to collect two RBIs as Angelia McDowell and Read came home to make the score 5-1. Hill finished the day going 4-for-8 with one run and two RBIs in the two games.

Salisbury's scoring rant continued as SU loaded the bases and Hornet pitcher Amanda Litwin walked in a run as senior shortstop Hannah Mills picked up an RBI. The Sea Gulls would bring in its final runs of the contest off the bat of senior designated player Lindsay Brown as she blasted a shot through the right side to bring home Rachel Spadin and Mills, 9-1.

The Hornets struggled against sophomore hurler Rachel Johnson, who mowed down 11 Shenandoah batters while walking none. The sophomore gave up her first run of the season but picked up her sixth win in the process.

In SU's second game, the maroon and gold would not be able to find its groove in the batter's box as Jordan Aylor kept the Sea Gulls off balance.

Eastern Mennonite would strike first in the fourth inning as Cheyenne Cash touched home due to a Sea Gull error but SU struck back quickly, tying the game in the bottom of the inning as pinch runner Alexis Peay put up a run for Salisbury off the bat of pinch hitter Paige Knussman.

Tied at one apiece the Royals took over from there, scoring four runs in the fifth. Junior pitcher Kathryn Larson took the loss in the circle, her first of the season.

Salisbury would get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but was not able to overcome the five-run deficit, falling 6-1.

The Sea Gulls will get a chance to bounce back, playing at the SU Softball Field tomorrow, Sunday, March 10 against Lynchburg College. The doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m.
