Seniors honored as Sea Gulls sink Captains 14-7 in regular season finale

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team finished its undefeated regular season with a win over No. 14 Christopher Newport University, 14-7, on Sunday at Sea Gull Stadium, celebrating Senior Day and its "Lax for a Cure" game, raising nearly $1,500 to fight breast cancer.

Senior attacker Katie Bollhorst led the way with seven points, while tying for a team-high with four goals. Sophomore midfielder Bethany Baer, one of two Sea Gulls with four points, netted four goals, while senior attacker Lauren Feusahrens chipped in with three goals and one assist.

Feusahrens gave Salisbury a 2-0 lead with her first two goals, scoring the first of the game at the 23:04 mark by running behind the cage from right to left and ripping a shot into the top right corner of the net; her second came less than five minutes later, running left to right in front of the goal and around the CNU defense before shooting into the left side of the net.

Following the Captains' first goal, Baer netted her first on an assist from Feusahrens with 11:57 left in the first half, taking a pass from behind the net and redirecting it for the score.

Senior midfielder Kara Koolage followed just 50 seconds later with a free-position goal.

CNU would score again at the 7:43 mark, but goals from Bollhorst and Feusahrens closed out the half and gave the Gulls a 6-2 lead.

At the half, Salisbury led in shot, (15-11) draw controls, (7-2) and ground ball pick-ups (10-7); the Gulls were also successful on all 10 clearing chances.

Junior attacker Shannon Carta opened the second half with a goal 59 seconds into the half, driving down the right side and scoring in the top of the cage.

After junior attacker Shelby Nemecek's free-position goal at the 26:39 mark to take an 8-2 lead, Bollhorst and Baer would combine to score all six remaining goals for the Sea Gulls.

Bollhorst's passes from behind the cage assisted Baer on the next two Salisbury goals, following the Captains' third score, and the Severna Park, Md., native would increase the lead to 12-3 on back-to-back goals of her own at the 14:46 and 14:26 marks.

Both players scored one more in the half to cap off the win.

Junior goalkeeper Ashton Wheatley earned the win, playing all 60 minutes in the cage and making eight saves.

The Salisbury seniors, consisting of Bollhorst, Feusahrens, Koolage, attacker Maggie Roundy and defenders Alyssa Hardesty and Kat Gartner, were honored before the game for their contributions to the women's lacrosse program.

Salisbury will now prepare for the Capital Athletic Conference tournament and will host a semifinal game on Saturday, as the team received a first-round bye. Log on to www.suseagulls.com for more information as it becomes available.
