Feusahrens leads Sea Gulls to CAC championship game with 16-4 win over St. Mary's

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team rolled to the Capital Athletic Conference final with a 16-4 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland. With the win, the Sea Gulls advance to the CAC final, looking to capture their 11th consecutive CAC championship.

Senior Lauren Feusahrens moved into the No. 5 spot in program history for goals scored with five goals on the afternoon for Salisbury (17-0), passing Flossy Owens (1992-95). The Solomons, Md., native now has a team-high 48 goals this season, and 151 in her career.

Feusahrens got the offense going for the Sea Gulls, netting a hat trick before St. Mary's (8-10) was able to get off a shot. The senior started the scoring for the Sea Gulls just 79 seconds into the contest, taking a pass at the top of the zone, dodging three Seahawk defenders before rifling a shot past the Seahawk goalie.

A few moments later, after a Sea Gull shot went wide, Feusahrens took the ball from the end line on the restart, came around the right side of the net to beat St. Mary's goalie Michelle DiMenna. Feusahrens picked up the hat trick 4:01 into the game, when junior Meghan Toomey caused a turnover, Feusahrens picked up the ground ball, raced downfield and fired a shot past DiMenna.

Salisbury took a 4-0 lead when sophomore Bethany Baer took a pass from senior Katie Bollhorst, for a point blank shot that found the back of the net. With that goal, the Sea Gulls had a commanding lead before St. Mary's was able to get into the offensive zone and attempt a shot.

The defense clouded out any attempt the Seahawks tried to generate offensively. Seniors Kat Gartner and Alyssa Hardesty, junior Meghan Toomey, sophomores Dominique Dipino and Laura Maskell, and freshman Allison Toomey kept the St. Mary's attack at bay. Sliding back into the zone were midfielders Baer and Kara Koolage to clog the Seahawk offensive zone.

Salisbury dominated the statsheet as well, outshooting the Seahawks 32-8 in the contest, including a 19-3 advantage in the first half. The Sea Gulls picked up two more ground balls in the game and collected three more draw controls. St. Mary's committed 22 turnovers, compared to Salisbury's 12. Salisbury ultimately gained the advantage in the contest off clearing attempts, holding St. Mary's to 7-of-18 on clearing attempts, while converting 16-of-17 of their own attempts.

Junior Ashton Wheatley played the majority of the game in net to pick up the victory in the cage. The Cambridge, Md., native turned away four Seahawk shots in 45 minutes of play.

Baer, Koolage and freshman Samantha Duranti each added two goals in the contest.

The Sea Gulls advance to the CAC championship game, facing off against York (Pa.) College, a 12-5 winner of the University of Mary Washington in the other semifinal. The championship game will be next Saturday, May 4, at Sea Gull Stadium. The time of that contest is yet to be determined.
