Sea Gulls outlast Generals to advanced to NCAA quarterfinals

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 12 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team's title defense continued on Saturday, as the Sea Gulls advanced to a NCAA Division III tournament quarterfinal game after defeating No. 8 Washington and Lee University, 7-4, in a second-round matchup.

The Salisbury defense clamped down on the Generals from the start, and freshman attackman Brady Dashiell led the Gulls with three goals, including the team's first two scores. Attackmen, junior Rhett DePol and sophomore Jesse Rabishaw, both tallied one assist.

Dashiell got the Sea Gull offense started early, with two goals in the first five minutes. He gave Salisbury its first score at the 13:41 mark, before gaining the two-goal lead less than three minutes later.

With just one second left on the clock in the first quarter, senior attackman Evan Hammersly found sophomore midfielder Kyle Goss on a pass from the right side, allowing Goss to plant a 10-yard shot into the cage; the Gulls took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter.

DePol opened the second quarter with a diving score, after cutting from right to left in front of the crease, less than 30 seconds into the period.

After W&L cut the Salisbury lead in half with its first two goals, sophomore defender Knute Kraus ran the length of the field on a clear after gathering a ground ball and cut towards the crease, beating the General's keeper on an underhand shot.

SU took a 5-2 lead into the half, leading in shots (14-11) and ground balls (11-7), and both teams had won 4-of-8 faceoffs.

The only goal of the third quarter came off of the stick of junior attackman Luke Phipps and gave Salisbury a 6-2 lead, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Generals added their final two goals in the fourth, cutting the lead to 6-4, but Dashiell solidified the win for the Gulls with 2:30 left in the game on his third score. Rabishaw picked up a ground ball near the crease and dished the ball to Dashiell for the goal.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Taylor played the entire game in the cage and made 11 saves for the win.

The Sea Gulls advance to play against No. 2 Dickinson College in a quarterfinal game on Wednesday, May 15. The Red Devils topped Adrian College, 20-7, on Saturday to advance. Visit www.suseagulls.com for more information as it becomes available.
