SU runs past Cabrini 21-1 into the 2nd round

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team looked like a team on a mission, dispatching Cabrini College from the Division III tournament with a 21-1 first round win Wednesday evening.

Senior Lauren Feusahrens netted four goals, all in the first half, to lead the Salisbury (19-0) attack. The Solomons, Md., native moves closer to the top 10 points scored list in program history with 187 points in her career. The senior sits at No. 5 on the all-time goals scored list, with 148 in her three seasons in maroon and gold.

It was all Sea Gulls from the beginning, with Salisbury netting the first 15 goals of the contest. Senior Maggie Roundy put the Sea Gulls on the board with a free-position goal coming with 26:54 remaining in the first half.

The next two goals were by sophomore Bethany Baer, taking passes from senior Katie Bollhorst. Both goals were similar in nature, with Bollhorst setting up behind the cage and feeding Baer who was cutting to the goal in front of the crease.

Senior Kara Koolage was the next to score for Salisbury, adding back-to-back goals to push the lead to 5-0. Nearly 10 minutes into the contest, Bollhorst tallied a goal, taking a pass from Koolage on the right side of the Cabrini (11-8) defense and rifling home a shot.

Feusahrens scored the next two Salisbury goals, both unassisted as she dipped and dodged past a host of Cabrini defenders for both goals. Moments later, following goals by Shannon Carta, Kate Haker and Halie Lear, Feusahrens would notch another two goals to round out her evening with 9:11 remaining in the first half with Salisbury up 13-0.

Cabrini held a 13-10 advantage in draw controls, but were unable to get past the swarming Sea Gull defense. Salisbury forced 15 Cavalier turnovers, with the Sea Gulls giving the ball away only nine times in the contest. Senior Alyssa Hardesty, junior Meghan Toomey and sophomore Kylie Hanley each had two caused turnovers to lead the Salisbury defense.

Salisbury held a considerable advantage in shots, outshooting the Cavaliers 34-12, including a 24-8 advantage in the first half. The Sea Gulls held a 14-8 advantage in ground balls as well.

Koolage, Baer and freshmen Samantha Duranti and Katelin Talbert each netted a pair of goals for the Sea Gulls in the contest.

With the win, the Sea Gulls advance to the second round of the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament to face Christopher Newport University. The game will be at Sea Gull Stadium and is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., this Saturday, May 11. Sea Gull Stadium will also host the second round contest between York (Pa.) College and Franklin & Marshall College. The winners of those two semifinal contests will play Sunday, with the winner advancing to Owings Mills, Md., and the women's lacrosse championship weekend.
