SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 25 Salisbury University volleyball team earned its first win at home on Wednesday night, as it defeated Washington (Md.) College, 3-1 (15-25, 25-10, 25-13, 25-10), at Maggs Physical Activity Center.

The Sea Gulls dropped the first set, after the Shorewomen opened the game on a 15-4 run. SU was plagued by five attack errors during the run and was unable to recover, allowing Washington to take the set, 25-15.

Junior Mattie Smith, who led the Gulls with a career-high 18 kills in the match, helped get the team back on track in the second set with six kills in the frame.

Salisbury took a 10-6 lead in the game, before going on a 15-4 run to tie the match, 1-1.

Smith and senior Tam Weems accounted for five of SU's final seven points in the set, as they combined on one block, Smith tallied three kills and Weems registered one.

The Gulls carried their momentum into the third set, taking a 12-1 lead to start the game.

The run included three kills from Smith and one, each, from Weems and sophomore Kacey Franz.

Washington got as close as nine with the score, 22-13, in the game, before the Gulls took a 2-1 lead with a 25-13 victory.

To complete the win in the fourth set, four kills by Smith and two from junior Julie Poston helped Salisbury build a 12-3 lead.

The Shorewomen cut the lead to 15-7, but a 10-3 run by the Sea Gulls ended the set and the match.

Franz led the team in assists (22) and digs (17), while freshman Gretchen Vandermeer added 17 assists and junior Michelle Meehan tallied 12 digs.

Freshman Katie Stouffer finished second on the team with nine kills.

Salisbury will be home again on Saturday for its next match, hosting Virginia Wesleyan College at Maggs PAC at 1 p.m.
