Sea Gulls fall to Saints 3-1 after hard-fought finish

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Salisbury University volleyball team traveled to Marymount (Va.) University on Wednesday evening, falling in Capital Athletic Conference action to the Saints 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 30-28) at the Verizon Sports Arena.

A trio of Sea Gulls led the Salisbury attack, reaching double-digit kills; senior Julie Poston led the team with 17, while sophomores Shannon Russell and Katie Stouffer chipped in with 13 and 11, respectively.

After kills from Russell, Poston, and Stouffer to start the first set, Salisbury took a quick 3-0 lead. However, the Saints fought back and eventually held a 16-12 advantage.

Another kill from Poston sparked a 4-0 run that allowed SU to tie the game.

The teams traded points down the stretch, as the Sea Gulls got two more kills from Russell, but eventually Marymount took the set on a block and a kill.

The second set remained close throughout, as the Gulls took their first lead, 2-1, on a service ace from Russell.

Trailing 17-14, Russell tallied a kill to spark a 5-2 run, giving Salisbury a 20-19 lead; Poston registered two kills in the spurt, while Stouffer capped the stretch with another.

The Saints were able to tie the score twice more, but a Stouffer kill closed the set and tied the match for the Sea Gulls.

Marymount took control of the third set with an 8-2 beginning run, before taking the game 25-14.

The fourth set proved to be a battle, as Salisbury took the initial lead 4-2, stretching the advantage to 13-8 after a Russell kill and two service aces from senior Michelle Meehan.

With two kills from senior Nikki Binetti, along with kills from Poston, Stouffer, and freshman Samantha Chubb, Salisbury held the lead until the Saints tied the score, 22-22.

From there, the teams fought back-and-forth, forcing the set into extra points. Russell tallied her final kill to give the Gulls a 28-27 lead, but Marymount came back with three-straight points to take the match.

Freshman Rachel Pierson led the team with 31 assists, while Meehan and Russell paced the defense with 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

Salisbury returns home for its next match, welcoming Southern Virginia University to Maggs Physical Activities Center on Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m.; during the match, the former SU volleyball student-athletes that were named to the CAC Silver Anniversary team with be honored, along with it being Homecoming Weekend.
