Salisbury downs Stevenson, 80-70, to stretch winning streak to five games

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team remained undefeated Tuesday night, collecting an 80-70 victory over Stevenson University at Maggs Physical Activities Center.

The Mustangs got out to a quick eight-point lead, but senior guard Anna Hackett halted the run with a three-pointer from the right wing three minutes into the game. Three-consecutive Stevenson turnovers and two jumpers by junior forward Julia McLaughlin would bring the Gulls back within one of Stevenson, 8-7.

After four points by the Mustangs, extending the lead to five, Hackett would answer with two jumpers and a layup to give Salisbury (5-0) its first lead, 13-12, that it wouldn't surrender for the rest of the game.

Before the break, the Sea Gulls would extend their lead as far as 15 points, but in the final minute, Mustang Stephanie Martinez knocked in a three-pointer from the right corner to cut the deficit to 12 at the half, 41-29.

Hackett led all scorers through the first 20 minutes with 15 points, while McLaughlin and senior guard Sarah Seipp chipped in eight and seven, respectively. Seipp also pulled down four boards and collected four steals, as the Sea Gulls held Stevenson to 34.3 percent shooting from the field. Salisbury shot 50 percent from the field, and 60 percent from behind the arc.

The Mustangs (2-2) opened the second half looking to chip away at the Sea Gull lead, scoring the first four points, but a jumper by senior guard Courtney McManus halted the attempt to close the deficit, bringing the spread back to 10 points, 43-33.

Salisbury maintained a lead near double digits before Stevenson would go on a 5-0 run to get within six just under six minutes into the second period, but a quick seven points off a Hackett layup, a jumper by senior forward Melanie Mocniak and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Lauren Rothfeld would give the Sea Gulls a 58-45 lead at the 13:23 mark.

Stevenson looked for one more run to draw within six, but that is as close as it got, as layups by juniors Karly Oristian and Kathy Albornoz brought the spread back to 10 with a 64-54 lead with seven minutes remaining.

Salisbury held on to the lead for the remainder of the game, going 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal up the 80-70 victory.

Hackett led the offense with 26 points and four assists, while Seipp added 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Sea Gulls go on the road for their next two games, as Salisbury opens up Capital Athletic Conference play at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday, December 3. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
