Barefoot's ninth inning RBI gives Sea Gulls 5-4 win over Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 13 Salisbury University baseball team picked up a season-opening 5-4 win over Virginia Wesleyan College, Friday afternoon at Marlins Field.

Salisbury (1-0) fell behind early, came back in the middle innings and then held off the Marlins to secure the win.

Junior Dan Fein (1-0) pushed his personal winning streak to 11-straight with the victory. The Southbury, Conn., native allowed four runs on nine hits over eight innings of work. The lefthander struck out seven, while walking one.

Fein had his struggles early in the contest, with Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first three frames. The starter would only allow one hit in the fourth through seventh innings. The Marlins would get three hits and push across a run in the eighth but Fein got out of the inning still in line for the win.

The Salisbury bats came to life in the fourth inning, starting with a leadoff single by senior Quinn Griffith, who finished the contest 2-for-4. Griffith scored the first of his two runs in the game when junior Jordan Gowe laced a double to score the first baseman. Gowe came around to score when junior Austin Barefoot put the ball in play to the shortstop, who committed the second of four Marlin errors, pushing across an unearned run.

Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth, the Sea Gulls got right back in the box and took the lead in their half of the fifth. Junior Kyle Hayman ripped a one-out single, followed by an RBI double by senior Ken O'Neill. Griffith moved O'Neill to third on a fly ball, and O'Neill scored when Gowe put the ball in play to the second baseman, who booted the ball, with Gowe getting credit for the RBI.

After the Marlins tied the score in the bottom of the eighth, Salisbury would push across the winning run in the top of the ninth. With one out, Griffith was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for the Sea Gulls to pull ahead. Gowe got his third hit of the contest, advancing Griffith to second. Barefoot hit a single down the left field line, scoring Griffith for the winning run.

Junior Kyle Hamby recorded his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Griffith, Hayman, O'Neill and freshman Pete Grasso each had two hits in the contest.

The Sea Gulls will be out of action over the weekend and will finish the home-and-home series with the Marlins on Monday, Feb. 17 at the SU Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
