Sea Gulls pick up 21-5 CAC win over Marymount

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. - The No. 7 Salisbury University baseball team picked up a 21-5 win over Marymount (Va.) University, Friday afternoon at Bishop O'Connell Field. The two teams were originally scheduled to play earlier this week but the contest was pushed back due to the snow that blanketed the Mid-Atlantic Region on Monday.

Salisbury (13-4, 5-2 CAC) would get on the board early, with two runs in the first. Senior Quinn Griffith drew a two-out walk and was moved to third on a double by junior Bobby Sanzone. With junior Jordan Gowe at bat, Griffith scored for a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch. Following a Gowe walk, senior Johnny Schiotis hit a single to right-center field that scored Sanzone to push the lead to 2-0.

Marymount (4-15, 0-6 CAC) would get a run back in its half of the first but the Sea Gulls would respond with a five-run second inning, highlighted by a Sanzone grand slam, his second homer of the season, for a 7-1 lead.

Schiotis drove in his second run of the contest as he led off the third inning with his first home run of the season for an 8-1 SU lead. Senior Bill Root extended the inning with a two-out double and scored when junior Kyle Hayman followed with a double of his own for a 9-1 lead.

The Saints would push across a run in the third off freshman Pete Grasso, who made his first collegiate start on the mound. The Wilmington, Del., native went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out a pair.

The Sea Gulls would add a run in the fourth, six in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 20-2 lead. Senior Ken O'Neill hit a three-run home run in the fifth, the third of the contest for the Sea Gulls and O'Neill's first of the season.

Marymount would score a pair of unearned runs in the sixth off reliever Dylan Anderson to make the score 20-4.

Sanzone picked up his seventh RBI of the contest with a bases loaded infield single in the seventh to push the lead to 21-4 in favor of the Sea Gulls. The Forest Hill, Md., native went 5-for-7 to lead the Salisbury attack, the effort just one hit shy of the CAC record for hits in a game. Hayman finished the contest 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a pair of RBIs. O'Neill and Schiotis each finished with three hits as well, and had five and four RBIs, respectively.

The Saints would push across a run in the bottom of the eighth for the final tally.

The Sea Gulls are back in action tomorrow, traveling to York College of Pennsylvania, for a doubleheader against the Spartans. Game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. York comes into the twin bill the lone remaining team unbeaten in conference play, while Salisbury sits in second in the CAC, tied with two other teams that have two losses in CAC action.
