Baseball sweeps Frostburg in CAC opening games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team opened its Capital Athletic Conference schedule by sweeping a doubleheader against Frostburg State University, Saturday at the SU Baseball Field. The Sea Gulls took game one 4-3 and game two 19-4, picking up their seventh and eighth wins of the season.

In the first game, Frostburg (7-2) struck first, plating two runs in the top of the third. Following a leadoff double and a walk, Dylan Shupe lined one down the right field line for an RBI single. Rob Jennings followed with a chopper that didn't go halfway down the third base line for another RBI single and a 2-0 Bobcat lead.

Salisbury (8-2) answered in the bottom of the third to get on the board when junior Bobby Sanzone skied a ball to left center, good for an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Bobcats padded their lead in the top of the fifth when junior Dan Fein uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Frostburg to go ahead 3-1.

The Sea Gulls would pose a threat in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with one out. After Jordan Gowe flied out for the second out, senior Ken O'Neill drew a four-pitch walk to push in a run.

After a quiet sixth, Salisbury would have an opportunity to do damage in the seventh, again loading the bases with one out, but Frostburg got out of the jam with a double play off the bat of senior Johnny Schiotis to end the threat.

The Sea Gulls would come back in dramatic fashion in the eighth to take the lead. As junior Kyle Hayman attempted to steal second base, the throw from the catcher went into centerfield allowing senior Bill Root to score. Hayman advanced to third and would give the Sea Gulls a 4-3 lead as he scampered home on a wild pitch.

That run would allow Fein to pick up the win. The lefty went eight innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, while striking out four. Classmate Kyle Hamby would work a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save.

Salisbury jumped out to an early lead in game two. In the bottom of the first, with freshman Pete Grasso on third and Sanzone on first, Bobcat starter Logan Hunt attempted to pick off Sanzone. The throw got away from first baseman Ricky Brady, allowing Grasso to score. A few batters later, Schiotis hit one back up the middle for two RBIs and a 3-0 SU lead.

The Sea Gulls would bust the game open in the bottom of the third, sending 12 hitters to the plate, scoring eight runs for an 11-0 lead.

Salisbury would plate another pair of runs in the fourth, before Frostburg got on the board with three runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 13-3. The Bobcats would plate another run in the sixth to further cut into the lead, 13-4.

The Sea Gulls would match that run in the sixth, to make the score 14-4, before adding five runs in the seventh to push the lead to 19-4.

In the second contest, the Sea Gulls pounded out 20 hits.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action this Monday, March 10, hosting Shenandoah University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
