Collacchi goes seven shutout innings to lead baseball past CNU, 6-0 in CAC tournament

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The No. 16 Salisbury University baseball team remained unbeaten in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, picking up a 6-0 win against Christopher Newport University on Friday afternoon at Jaquet Field on the campus of York College of Pennsylvania.

Junior pitcher Brett Collacchi worked seven-plus shutout innings, giving up just two hits, and freshman Tom LaBriola had three hits to lead the Sea Gulls in the win.

Collacchi saw two Captains (21-13) reach base in the top of the first inning, but would not allow a runner to reach scoring position. After a one-out single, Collacchi picked off Billy Steel at first. And Collacchi would send the game to the bottom of the first with an inning-ending fly out after another Captain reached base on an error.

The final out of the first was the start of 18-straight batters that Collacchi would retire, six of which were retired on strikes, before the next runner would reach in the top of the seventh.

Before the next Captain would safely reach first, the Salisbury offense was able to push four runs across, beginning with a single run in the bottom of the third.

Senior Bill Root reached on an infield single to open the third inning and advanced to third on a pair of groundouts before scoring the first run of the contest on classmate Johnny Schiotis' single through the right side.

In the fifth inning, junior Kyle Hayman got things started with a double to right-center field and, after a Quinn Griffith walk, came home on Schiotis' double for the 2-0 lead. Griffith would later score on designated hitter Sam Myers' ground ball.

Hayman was part of Salisbury's run in the sixth as the Gulls opened up a 4-0 lead. After Root singled, Hayman walked and the pair executed a double steal to put two in scoring position with one out. It was one of three steals on the day for Hayman.

After a groundout, for the second out of the frame, Griffith reached on an error, allowing Root to score. Root was one of three Sea Gulls to score two runs each.

The Captains' final scoring chance came in the top of the eighth. Collacchi walked the first batter of the frame and was lifted in favor of sophomore Jon Schmedel. The Mountainside, N.J., native got a fly out before a Salisbury error and a wild pitch put two Christopher Newport runners in scoring position with one out. But a strikeout and another fly out would end the inning, preserving the shutout.

Salisbury scored two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, coming home on a Schiotis squeeze bunt – one of his three RBIs in the game – and a Bobby Sanzone single to right.

Junior Kyle Hamby would come on to slam the door, retiring the side in the order, in the ninth, allowing Salisbury to play Saturday without a loss.

Salisbury will take on the host Spartans on Saturday morning, beginning at 9 a.m., in the meeting of the final two unbeaten teams in the field. York defeated Frostburg State University, 5-1, on Friday. The winner of Saturday's game will advance to Sunday's championship game, beginning at 11 a.m., while the losing team will play again at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday.
