Sea Gulls earn season series split with 3-1 win over St. Mary's

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 14 Salisbury University baseball team picked up a 3-1 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference play at the SU Baseball Field.

Salisbury (16-6, 8-4 CAC) got on the board in the third, with a leadoff single by junior Austin Barefoot, followed by a back-to-back bunt singles by senior Bill Root and junior Kyle Hayman to load the bases. Freshman Pete Grasso singled to left field to drive in Barefoot and Root for a 2-0 SU lead.

St. Mary's (14-15, 5-6 CAC) would answer in the fourth, pushing across a run to cut the SU lead. Following a pair of two-out walks by Salisbury starter Dylan Anderson, Paul Roemer hit a double down the left field line to score Luke Green. Anderson got a groundout to end the inning, leaving runners on second and third to limit the damage.

Anderson would get help from his defense to protect the lead, including Barefoot throwing out a runner at second to end the sixth inning. The junior righty from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., would get help an inning later to get out of a jam. Senior Johnny Schiotis fielded a grounder, stepped on second and fired to first for an inning-ending double play.

Schiotis would contribute with the stick in the next half inning to extend the Sea Gull lead. With runners on the corners and two outs, the Levittown, Pa., native ripped a grounder down the third base line for an RBI double that scored classmate Quinn Griffith for a 3-1 lead.

Anderson would exit with two outs in the seventh, having allowed a run on six hits. He walked six batters but worked around them to limit the Seahawk attack.

Sophomore Jon Schmedel would come on in relief and get Curtis Goodie swinging to end the inning.

Junior Kyle Hamby would come in for the ninth, picking up his third save of the season.

Today's win earned Salisbury a season-series split with the Seahawks, who won 3-1 on March 11.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action tomorrow, traveling to take on Route 13 and CAC rival Wesley College. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
