Swimming drops close meet to Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams competed against Marymount (Va.) University on Saturday afternoon, as the men lost 117-88, and the women were defeated 121-84.

Men

Junior Will Gough had a big day for the Sea Gulls, notching three first-place finishes in the meet. Gough's first gold of the day came in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 22.09 seconds. The Ellicott City, Maryland native also took first in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 49.62 seconds. Gough's final win of the day came in the 400-yard freestyle relay where he, along with freshman Conor Johnston, junior Jake Blazer and senior Rich Ambrose recorded a time of 3:20.93 for the gold.

Johnston also had a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, good for a time of 2:09.29.

In the 200-yard butterfly, senior Daniel Keller swam his way to first place, touching the wall at 2:03.20, while sophomore Kevin Mejia finished third for a time of 2:08.00. Keller, as well as sophomores Okan Eyigor and Travis Maida, and Blazer also placed second in the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:49.33.

Eyigor also notched a time of 2:00.34 in the 200-yard backstroke for a second-place finish and took third in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:57.49.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Mejia took silver with a time of 5:15.17, while sophomore Scott Schirmer took bronze in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 51.49 seconds.

Sophomore Kevin Drury also tallied a third place finish on the day, recording a time of 2:13.19 in the 200-yard backstroke.

Women

The women's squad also had a swimmer win multiple events on the day, as junior Nicki Schultcollected three victories. Schult's first gold came in the 1000-yard freestyle, completing the race in a time of 11:37.40. In the same event, sophomore Claudia Guay took second in a time of 12:01.62, while sophomore Stephanie Wilson placed third in a time of 12:22.61.

Schult also won the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 5:36.82, almost eight seconds ahead of second place. The Bowie, Maryland native's final win of the afternoon, with the help of her teammates, sophomores Rachel Lisk and Nicole Marders, and Guay, came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing the race in a time of 3:59.41. A team of freshmen Kelsey Wumer and Bailey Wilson, and juniors Kayla Wumer and Andria Moyer placed second in the same event, recording a time of 4:03.80.

Marders also took second in the 200-yard butterfly for a time of 2:29.11, while sophomore Layne Gable finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:09.65.

Freshman Bizu Baldinazzo, sophomore Victoria Radcliffe, senior Melissa Alessandrini, and Gable completed the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 4:22.31, which was good for second place.

Baldinazzo also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.55 seconds, while Radcliffe notched silver in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.56.

Salisbury will be back at Maggs Physical Activities Center on Saturday, January 24 for its final regular season meet of the year when it competes against St. Mary's College of Maryland. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
