Salisbury takes down Wesley in mid-week match

DOVER, Del. – The Salisbury University volleyball team traveled to Wesley College on Wednesday evening, defeating the Wolverines 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-9) in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early 6-3 lead, as junior Katie Stouffer tallied two kills and junior Jordan Lawson added one in the opening moments. Sophomore Rachel Pierson also notched a service ace.

Salisbury continued to hold a slight lead until the score was 8-6, and a service ace from junior Kirby Given sparked a 6-0 run to increase the advantage to 14-6.

Junior Shannon Russell put down four-consecutive kills to close the stretch, before hitting another kill to give the Gulls a double-digit lead, 17-7.

The Sea Gulls closed the first set on an 8-3 spurt, and senior Kacey Franz capped the set win with a kill for the 1-0 lead.

The second set began much like the first, with each team keeping the other close. Wesley took a 4-1 lead, but a Stouffer kill began a 3-0 spurt to tie the score for Salisbury.

With the score tied 8-8, Lawson put down another kill to begin a 14-0 run for the Gulls.

Russell tallied three kills to power the stretch, while Franz notched two service aces, and sophomore Samantha Chubb put down a kill. Russell added another kill in the set, as she led the team on the night with 11.

Given closed the set with a kill for the 2-0 lead.

A service ace from junior Krista Pecenka got the Sea Gulls started in the final set, as the team scored the first seven points of the game. Stouffer put down three kills in the run, while freshman Kelly Surkovich added a service ace.

Stouffer hit two more kills, and Russell added another, as the Gulls pushed the lead to 16-3.

Freshman Riley Forquer closed the set for Salisbury with four-straight kills, setting a new career high on the way to capping the win.

Stouffer finished second on the team with 10 kills, Pierson led the setting with 21 assists, and Franz and Surkovich paced the defense with eight digs each.

Salisbury heads back out onto the road for its next game, traveling to Southern Virginia University on Saturday, October 17; the match is set for 1 p.m.
