Sea Gulls sweep CAC doubleheader at Mary Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 2 Salisbury University softball team picked up a pair of wins in the team's Capital Athletic Conference opening doubleheader at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Salisbury 4, Mary Washington 1

The Sea Gulls grabbed the early lead in the opening game, with junior Kim Dorsey starting the game with a single up the middle. She advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a flyout. With two outs, classmate Paige Knussman singled to right field, giving Salisbury the 1-0 lead.

Salisbury would increase the lead in the third inning, putting together two runs on four hits, with the help from an Eagle error.

Freshman LeAnne Collins opened things up by reaching on the Mary Washington miscue, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Knussman's single up the middle. Knussman moved to third on Molly Simpson's single, and pushed the lead to 3-0 when sophomore Caitlin Lake singled to left field.

The Eagles scored their only run of the doubleheader in the home half of the third, when Hannah Williams got on with a leadoff bunt single, one of just three hits of the game against Salisbury starting pitcher Rachel Johnson. Williams advanced on a bunt before a pair of wild pitches brought her around to score, cutting the lead to 3-1.

Johnson would not allow another base runner in the final four innings of play, retiring the final 13 Eagles of the game. In collecting her seventh win of the year, the senior struck out nine in the complete-game effort.

The scoring was finished off in the seventh, as freshman Summer Paglianete brought home the final insurance run. Paglianete came home to score after pinch running for senior Rebecca Hoey, who reached on a leadoff walk. It was Angela Malgieri, who singled to left field, to drive in the fourth run.

Malgieri and Knussman each had two hits in the game as Salisbury came up with 11 in the game.

Game 2: Salisbury 4, Mary Washington 0

In the nightcap, the Sea Gulls (10-1, 2-0 CAC) got all the scoring done in the third inning thanks to four hits. Malgieri and Dorsey kicked things off with singles off Mary Washington starter Rachel Watts before a strikeout and a pitching change.

The relief pitcher, Ashton Ferneyhough, got the second out of the inning before Knussman came up with the RBI single, scoring Malgieri from second base for the 1-0 lead. Hoey lifted a ball to center field, which was dropped, allowing Knussman and Dorsey to score. A second Mary Washington error in the inning brought home the fourth run for the Sea Gulls.

It was all the offense would need as starting pitcher Annah Brittingham worked her third complete game of the year. The junior scattered six hits and struck out eight while walking one Mary Washington batter.

Knussman and Malgieri again led the offensive effort. Knussman was 3-for-4 in the game while Malgieri was 2-for-2.

Mary Washington (10-6, 0-2 CAC) was paced offensively by Brittany Scites, who had three hits in the doubleheader.

Salisbury returns home on Sunday, March 22, hosting DePauw University in a doubleheader at the SU Softball Field; first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
