Balanced offensive effort lifts Sea Gulls past Wolverines, 7-3

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – The No. 3 Salisbury University baseball team used a balanced effort from its offense to take down Capital Athletic Conference opponent Wesley College, 7-3, on Wednesday afternoon and remain undefeated.

The Wolverines (6-11, 4-6 CAC) would get on the board first in the contest, tallying three runs in the bottom of the third to take an early 3-0 lead, but the Salisbury defense and pitching would not allow another Wesley run the rest of the game.

In the top of the fourth, the Sea Gull offense would answer with two runs of its own to crack into the Wolverines' lead.

Senior Bobby Sanzone would reach first base on a one-out walk to start off the inning and would later advance into scoring position after junior Alex Lipman was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Tom LaBriola would then step up and provide Salisbury with its first run of the contest, hitting an RBI single that sent Sanzone home. Senior Danny Breen provided the final run of the inning with a single that scored Lipman.

SU's offense opened up again in the top of the fifth, this time tallying three runs and taking the lead before the half inning was over.

Senior Kyle Hayman started off the half inning with a leadoff walk and would advance to second after sophomore Pete Grasso reached on a fielder's choice. The two runners would both move into scoring position on a groundout before a two-RBI single from Sanzone into left field scored them and gave the Gulls a 4-3 advantage, a lead which they would not relinquish. Another single from LaBriola would cap the scoring in the inning, sending Sanzone home and increasing Salisbury's lead to 5-3.

The Sea Gulls (15-0, 10-0 CAC) would finalize their scoring in the game in the top of the sixth, scoring two insurance runs to push the lead to 7-3.

Senior Jordan Gowe accounted for the scoring in the inning when he blasted a two-run triple that scored Grasso and junior Jake Dmiterchik.

Senior Brett Collacchi saw the start on the mound for Salisbury, pitching 4 1/3 innings and notching five strikeouts before junior Jon Schmedel would step in and take over partway through the bottom of the fifth. Schmedel would earn the win in the game, striking out four and allowing only one hit in his 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Junior Jeff Oster came in for relief in the final two innings, closing out the game with three strikeouts and allowing just two hits.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Thursday, April 2 when they travel to Newport News, Virginia to take on Christopher Newport University in another conference, single-game matchup. The first pitch for that game is set for 3 p.m.
