Sea Gulls take down Shoremen in non-conference battle

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Effective pitching and a balanced offensive effort led the No. 5 Salisbury University baseball team over Washington (Md.) College, 5-2, in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon.

The Sea Gulls got started early in the contest, notching a run in the top of the first to go ahead 1-0.

Sophomore Pete Grasso started with a one-out single up the middle and was moved over to second on a groundout before senior Bobby Sanzone hit a two-out RBI single into center field to score Grasso and put Salisbury on the board.

Salisbury fell behind 2-1 after giving up runs to Washington in the bottom of the second and fourth innings, but battled back in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to retake the lead for good.

Shoremen pitcher Sam McGovern walked senior Jordan Gowe and Sanzone to start the inning and a bunt single from senior Danny Breen loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice from senior Sam Myers kept the bases loaded before junior Alex Lipman sliced a one-out single down the left-field line to score Sanzone and Breen and give the Gulls a 3-2 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, Salisbury extended its lead, building a three-run advantage over Washington to put the game away.

Sophomore Tom LaBriola started the inning with a leadoff single up the middle. The Huntingtown, Maryland native advanced 90 feet when Hayman executed a sacrifice bunt before a one-out double down the left-field line from Grasso scored LaBriola. Gowe accounted for the final run of the game on the next at-bat when he drilled an RBI single into right field, sending Grasso across home plate and putting the score at 5-2.

Senior Brett Collacchi earned his fourth win of the season on the mound, pitching eight innings with four strikeouts. Senior Kyle Hamby came in to pitch in the ninth for the Gulls and allowed no hits in the inning, tallying his third save of the year.

Salisbury will travel to Aston, Pennsylvania on Monday, April 27 to take on Neumann University in a single-game matchup. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
