Strong offense, dominant defense lead Sea Gulls over Captains

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 11 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team avenged last season's overtime loss to Christopher Newport University, taking a 16-3 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Captains on Wednesday night at Sea Gull Stadium.

Sophomore Nathan Blondino got the offense going with a goal at the 10:05 mark, taking the ball after a restart from behind the cage, curling around the left side of the crease, and finishing high for a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Carson Kalama pushed the lead to 3-0 with two-straight scores on the crease, with the first at the 8:25 mark and the second just 35 seconds later. He then assisted senior Mike Kane in transition for a wide-open shot in a two-on-one with the Captains' keeper, giving the Gulls a 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Salisbury tacked on five more goals in the second, while the defense held CNU scoreless through the first half. The Captains only tallied six shots in the first two quarters, while turning the ball over 18 times.

Junior James Burton scored just 1:58 into the second period, driving right for a shot into the top of the cage.

The next two Salisbury scores came on assists from senior Sean Fitzgerald, who finished the game with a team-high six. He first found Blondino curling around the right side of the crease, before dishing to junior Thomas Cirillo from the back-right behind the cage to the left wing for a shot inside the left pipe.

The Sea Gulls took a 9-0 lead into halftime, after a goal from junior Adam Stork and a second score from Burton to end the half.

At the break, Salisbury was outshooting the Captains 25-6, while picking up more ground balls, 19-12.

Fitzgerald found Kane cutting down the middle of the box for the first goal of the second half on a man-up chance to take a double-digit lead, 10-0.

After Christopher Newport found the goal for its first, another man-up score, this time from Burton, on Fitzgerald's fourth helper, pushed the lead back to double digits with 9:33 left in the quarter.

Kane and Kalama would each add another goal to their totals, while Fitzgerald notched two more assists in the final five minutes of the third quarter to help the Gulls take a 15-1 lead into the final frame.

Kalama's team-high fourth goal capped the game for Salisbury in the fourth, just 11 seconds into the quarter.

Fitzgerald led the team with six points on his assists, while Kalama chipped in with five.

Freshman Will Nowesnick led the dominant defense with four caused turnovers, while the team held CNU to only 10 shots through the first three quarters of the game and caused 15 turnovers.

Senior Connor Anderson earned his eighth win in the cage, playing 45 minutes and making four saves.

The Sea Gulls hit the road for their next game, taking on Frostburg State University on Saturday, April 11 in CAC action; the opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m.
