No. 3 Sea Gulls take down Saints, 13-3, in CAC matchup at Nats Youth Baseball Academy

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 3 Salisbury University baseball team traveled to our nation's capital to take on Marymount (Va.) University at the Washington Nationals' Youth Baseball Academy and earned a 13-3 victory in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Sea Gulls built a big lead early in the contest, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning.

Junior Tyler Hrycak got things started with a leadoff single up the middle. After Hrycak stole second, he would be moved further into scoring position when a groundout sent him to third. Junior Jake Dmiterchik hit a bunt single to the pitcher that scored Hyrcak for the first run in the game.

With one out, senior Kyle Hayman hit a single into center field, advancing Dmiterchik to second, before a single from sophomore Pete Grasso moved each runner up to load the bases.

Jordan Gowe reached first on an error, scoring Dmiterchik. With the bases loaded again, Marymount pitcher John Lamotta walked senior Bobby Sanzone, sending Hayman home.

With two outs, senior catcher Austin Barefoot sent a two-run single into right field that scored Sanzone and Gowe, capping the scoring in the inning. Barefoot would lead the offensive effort in the game, going 4-for-5 while six Sea Gulls finished with at least two hits.

The top of the fourth was a similar inning to the second, as Salisbury brought in five more runs to extend its lead to 10-1. This time, however, the bulk of the scoring was done with two outs on the board.

Wtih one out, Gowe smashed a double into center field before Sanzone walked and the pair pulled off a double steal to advance to second and third.

A single through the left side from junior Alex Lipman notched the first run of the inning, scoring Gowe. Lamotta hit Barefoot with a pitch to load the bases before tallying a strikeout for the second out of the inning.

After the strikeout, Lamotta hit senior Danny Breen, which forced Sanzone home.

Dmiterchik did the final damage of the inning, connecting with a double into right-center that scored all three baserunners and increased Salisbury's lead to 10-1. Dmiterchik and Grasso each had three hits in the game.

Salisbury scored three more runs in the game, with all three scores coming in the top of the sixth, to put the game away.

Junior Connor Shockley saw the start on the mound for the Sea Gulls. The Salisbury, Maryland native pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing only three runs and striking out four. Junior Jon Schmedel pitched a hitless inning of relief with a strikeout, while junior Jeff Oster closed out the final two outs.

Salisbury will travel to take on No. 6 Frostburg State University in a conference doubleheader on Saturday in the CAC regular season finale. The first game is set for 12 p.m.
