Swimming picks up a pair of victories in final home meet of the season

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University swimming teams took on Marymount (Va.) University in their last home meets of the season on Thursday evening at Maggs Physical Activities Center, and the men won 189-87, while the women took down the Saints 132-73.

Men

The men picked up seven first-place finishes en route to the victory with freshman Peter Moyer being the lone Gull to tally two of them, as he finished the 200-meter freestyle in 2:01.55 and the 400-meter freestyle in 4:35.85.

Finishing in second in the 400-meter freestyle was Conor Johnston (4:37.62), who had an exceptional day. Johnston grabbed a victory in the 800-meter freestyle (9:29.82) and muscled out a hard-fought second-place finish on the last leg of the 200-meter individual medley (2:24.42).

Jake Blazer and Will Gough showed their abilities in the freestyle sprints as in the 50-meter freestyle Gough picked up the victory in 24.37 seconds, while Blazer finished just behind him for second place (24.64 seconds). Then in the 100-meter freestyle, Blazer touched the wall first (54.85 seconds) and Gough finished second in 55.71 seconds.

Also picking up first-place finishes for Salisbury was Stephen Arcidiacono, who completed the 100-meter butterfly in 1:27.71, and Okan Eyigor who finished the 100-meter backstroke less than .50 seconds off his pool-record time (59.70 second) to pick up the win.

Women

The women had five first-place finishers in individual races, led by Victoria Radcliffe who won both races she competed in; finishing the 200-meter freestyle in 2:13.38 and the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:20.36.

Nicki Schult had a strong outing as she came away with a first place and second-place finish. To get the victory, Schult swam the 400-meter freestyle in 4:55.33, then picked up second in the 800-meter freestyle (10:07.33).

The other members of the women's team to secure first-place finishes on the day were Bizu Baldinazzo (100-meter freestyle, 1:03.05), Nikky Marders (100-meter butterfly, 1:09.05), and Madison Tinus (50-meter freestyle, 29.15 seconds).

Claudia Guay and Layne Gable each finished with a second place and third-place finish on the day. Guay finished second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:40.17, and picked up her third-place finish in the 800-meter freestyle (10:31.86). Gable got her second-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly (1:09.92), while grabbing third in the 200-meter freestyle (2:20.48).

Both teams return to action on Saturday, January 30 when they will travel to St. Mary's City, Md., to take on St. Mary's College of Maryland in their final regular-season meets of the season.
