Second half surge leads men's basketball to win at Harrisburg, best season start since 2000-01

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The No. 19 Salisbury University men's basketball team picked up its second Capital Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday traveling to collect a 70-39 victory at Pennsylvania State University-Harrisburg.

The win is the sixth straight to open the year, marking the best start for the program since the 2000-01 season.

Chad Barcikowski got the scoring started just 13 seconds into the game with a jumper for the first of his team-high 17 points on the day as the Sea Gulls (6-0, 2-0 CAC) started strong, opening up an eight-point lead just over halfway through the opening period.

The edge was just two points moments earlier, but a pair of free throws from Wyatt Smith and buckets from Terray Quickley and Justin Witmer pushed the advantage to 17-9.

The Lions (3-3, 0-2 CAC) would not go quietly, drawing even at 17-17 with 6:38 remaining in the first half and the lead would trade hands five times in the opening half, with two other ties, before Harrisburg took a 28-25 lead at halftime on the strength of nine points from freshman Dante Brown.

Salisbury remained behind for the first few minutes of the second half, but Smith's layup tied the contest at 30-30 just before a defensive stop and Barcikowski hit a three-pointer from the left corner off a feed from Smith to give the Sea Gulls the lead.

A Gordon Jeter steal, set up the junior at the other end for a layup and a foul, and the three-point play pushed Salisbury's lead to six points and the Salisbury defense took over from there, forcing difficult shots from the Lions and holding Harrisburg to 4-of-21 shooting from the floor and 11 turnovers in the second half. In the game, the Sea Gulls came up with 19 points off turnovers – 16 of which were produced in the second half.

Salisbury got hot from outside to stretch the lead to as many as 33 points with just under two minutes to play in the contest. Barcikowski hit three shots from beyond the arc, and the Sea Gulls went 4-of-9 in the closing 20 minutes from outside, while shooting 46 percent from the floor in the period.

The Sea Gull defense held Khalil White to just five points on 1-of-9 shooting in the contest. White entered the day as the CAC's second-leading scorer averaging 18.2 points in the team's first five games. Brown could manage just two points after halftime, and led the Lions with 11 points in the game.

Smith notched his third double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 boards, including four offensive rebounds as Salisbury held a 46-32 edge on the glass in the game. Witmer finished with 10 points and three assists.

The Sea Gulls return to action next Saturday, December 10 as they travel to Southern Virginia University in a contest slated to tip at 3 p.m.
