Stingy defense and balanced scoring push Gulls to 14-2 win over Washington College

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's lacrosse team squared off against Washington (Md.) College, with the winner taking home the Charles B. Clark Cup, and came away with a 14-2 victory at Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday night.

The contest started with both teams playing an up and down the field brand of lacrosse with both teams pushing every transition opportunity, resulting in several turnovers.

James Burton tallied the first Sea Gull marker just 37 seconds into the game, as he barreled down the middle of the Shoremen defense and fought through a double and finished in traffic.

Thomas Cirillo added one from a deep-lefty shot before Tyler Powers connected on a feed from Tanner Barbieri to cut Salisbury's lead in half.

Two minutes later, Nathan Blondino put one home at 8:11 to start a run of seven goals in a row for the Salisbury offense. Highlighting the stretch was a Jake Rotman goal where he started to sweep across the top of the offensive zone, then put on the brakes, planted his feet and ripped an underhand shot that blew past the keeper to the top shelf.

The second midfield line for Salisbury had a big day, with Rotman going for two points as he added an assist later. Christian Ottenritter also went for a goal and an assist, while Garrett Reynolds scored one of his own.

At halftime, Salisbury had only conceded eight shots, with Joshua Dean having three saves at the break. Also at halftime, Salisbury was 1-for-1 on the man up, while the Shoremen were 0-for-3, as the Salisbury defense held the Washington man-up unit to a 0-7 performance on the day.

The Salisbury run went until 13:19 left in the third quarter with Nick Boyles scoring for Washington.

The Sea Gulls responded less than a minute later with a Carson Kalama tally and got four more goals after Kalama's to end the game at 14-2.

The Salisbury defense was able to hold Washington scoreless in two quarters, while only allowing two goals. The last time a Sea Gull defense held an opponent to two goals was in February of 2015 in a 12-2 decision over Widener University.

Will Nowesnick stayed hot on the defense end, notching five caused turnovers for the second-straight game. Salisbury also got spirited defensive efforts from Preston Dabbs, Andrew Ternahan, and Davis Anderson at the defensive midfield.

Dean got the win in net, moving to 7-0 on the year, while Ben Flood's ten-save performance was not enough as he falls to 3-2.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, March 19, when it goes on the road to take on the University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action. That game is set for 1 p.m.
