Shockley earns first win as Sea Gulls down Knights, 6-4

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 4 Salisbury University baseball team began its week on Tuesday with a 6-4 win over Neumann University at the SU Baseball Field.

Senior Connor Shockley earned the start on the mound for the Gulls, and quickly retired the side in order to start the game, allowing the Salisbury offense to jump out to an early lead.

Senior Alex Lipman singled to left to get the offense going in the bottom of the first, followed by a walk by junior Pete Grasso. Senior Jake Dmiterchik reached on a fielder's choice to advance Lipman and replace Grasso at first, allowing junior Tom LaBriola a chance with runners at the corners.

LaBriola ripped a 1-and-0 pitch down the right-field line, scoring both runners on his way to third for a two-run triple.

Shockley continued to dominate, leading to his first win of the season. He didn't allow a hit until the top of the fourth inning and held the Knights scoreless through the first five innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Jack Barry led off with a walk, made his way to third on a ground out and fly out, and eventually scored on a wild pitch to tack on a run for a 3-0 Salisbury lead.

Neumann eventually broke through with a run in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, but Salisbury continued to add to its lead.

In the Gulls' half of the seventh, Barry came to the plate with senior Tyler Hrycak on first. Barry found the right-center gap for a line-drive single, scoring Hrycak all the way from first to push the lead to 4-2.

The Knights cut the lead to one in the top of the eighth, but Salisbury again answered, securing its advantage with a two-run bottom of the inning.

Senior Kyle Goodwin led off with a walk, and with some heads-up base running, advance to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a sacrifice fly from Lipman.

LaBriola then added his third RBI of the game with a single into left field, scoring Dmiterchik from second, who previously reached on another fielder's choice.

A Knights' home run added their final run in the ninth, but Grasso, who came in to record the final out in the eighth, closed out the game in the ninth for his second save of the year.

Freshman AJ Korczynski tallied another strong relief appearance, pitching 1 2/3 innings and notching four strikeouts.

In the winning effort, Shockley pitched five innings, allowing only three hits and striking out three.

The Sea Gulls are back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9, traveling to Christopher Newport University to begin Capital Athletic Conference play. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
