Gulls end regular season at 17-0 after 17-8 win over Cabrini on senior day

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team hosted No. 15 Cabrini College on Saturday afternoon as a part of the team's senior day festivities and beat the Cavaliers, 17-8, to round out the regular season with a 17-0 record.

Cabrini came out of the gate with a high energy level as at the end of the opening quarter, Cabrini was up 4-3, and held an edge in groundballs, 11-8.

Carson Kalama opened up the day's scoring just three minutes into the game, as he put a James Burton feed just under the crossbar from the outside. Burton finished the game with five assists, moving his Capital Athletic Conference leading mark to 39.

Garrett Reynolds and Jake Rotman tacked on the other two first-quarter markers for Salisbury.

On Reynold's goal, he dodged from the top of the offensive zone, starting top right and sweeping across the face of the net and took a shot on the run from 10 yards that found the back of the net.

Opening the scoring in the second quarter, the Cavaliers brought their lead to 5-3 before Nathan Blondino found Kalama on the crease, who finished low after giving numerous stick fakes to the Cabrini keeper with seven minutes left in the half.

Cabrini added one with four and a half minutes before the half, but Salisbury exploded in the final four minutes for three goals.

Thomas Cirillo notched one just 30 seconds after the Cavaliers' last score, then a minute later, tied the game at six. To tie it, he beat his defender down the right alley but got too close to goal-line extended and cut back up field to his left hand to improve his angle and put one on cage that got a piece of the keeper, but squeaked in for the equalizer.

Kalama got his third of the game a minute and a half before halftime as Preston Dabbs started the Sea Gull clear and raced down field and dished it to Blondino, who quickly moved the ball to Kalama who only had the goalie to beat to put Salisbury up 7-6 at the half.

The third quarter was all Salisbury, burying six goals, while shutting down Cabrini.

In the third, Cirillo, Kalama, and Rotman all added one to their goal total, while Brady Dashiell nabbed two and Hunter Schaeffer found the back of the net from 12 yards out.

Ahead 13-6 going into the last period, Jordan Krug got one for the Cavaliers, but it was not enough and the defense locked down, only allowing one more goal, while the Gulls got four in the quarter, including three man-up goals.

Colin Reymann had his third double-digit save performance in his last four starts as he shut the Cavaliers down on some chances that could have swayed momentum early, and held strong for the win down the stretch.

Reymann was supplemented on the defensive end with big days from Kyle Tucker and Andrew Ternahan. Tucker drew a physical matchup of guarding Cabrini's leading scorer, Matt LoParo, and held him in check while grabbing five groundballs and causing three turnovers.

Ternahan added six groundballs to lead the Gulls, and had two caused turnovers.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when it will host a Capital Athletic Conference semifinal contest. The Sea Gulls will play the winner of a first-round matchup between fourth-seeded Frostburg State University and fifth-seeded University of Mary Washington. Game time on the semifinal contest is to be determined.
