Salisbury cruises past Cabrini, 15-1, to advance to NCAA regional

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – After winning its 16th Capital Athletic Conference championship, and a two-week break, the No. 3 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team picked up right where it left off on Saturday, taking down Cabrini College, 15-1, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

It took less than two minutes for the Sea Gulls to get on the board in the contest, as sophomore Kristen Murphy took advantage after getting fouled in the fan early and scored on a free-position shot.

Murphy's early tally sparked a four-goal run for Salisbury to open the game, and the Gulls took the 4-0 lead with over 15 minutes left in the first.

Junior Gabbi Nieves capitalized on a man-up opportunity at 18:26 when she built up speed, darted into the middle of the fan, and finished to the right of Cabrini goalkeeper Megan Barlow.

Two minutes later, senior Megan Wallenhorst continued the run with an unassisted goal before Nieves notched her second goal of the day on a pass from Murphy at 15:58.

The Cavaliers (14-6) answered back with a free-position goal at 14:54 when Sasha Wozniak found the back of the net, but the Sea Gulls would dominate from then on, outscoring Cabrini, 11-0 for the rest of the contest.

Freshman Gabrielle Mongno scored her first goal of the afternoon at 10:15 when she cut into the fan and finished on a low shot off a feed from sophomore Dana King; King notched another assist four minutes later, getting the ball to sophomore Emma Wall who scored to put Salisbury up 6-1.

Wall scored her second goal of the day on an unassisted shot at 3:09, before Nieves scored to close out the first half with an 8-1 lead after dodging a Cabrini defender in the fan and finishing with a bouncing shot.

The Sea Gulls kept up the intensity in the second half, scoring less than a minute in when junior Hannah Young scored off an assist from Wallenhorst.

At 26:28, Mongno tallied her second score of the afternoon on another assist from Murphy, and freshman Lindsey Wagner put one into the back of the net three minutes later off a feed from Young.

Nieves scored her game-high fourth goal of the contest at 17:10 after taking a ball from Wagner, but for the next 12 minutes neither team would score.

During the 12-minute span, the Salisbury defense pressured Cabrini's offense, causing six turnovers during the time frame to keep Cabrini from scoring.

The Sea Gulls tallied three more goals in the contest, with Mongo and freshman Martha Hutzell notching the first two goals, and freshman Courtney Fegan capping the scoring in the game with 37 seconds left on her first-career goal.

Junior Kieran Kelleher, sophomore Alissa Talbert, King, and Mongno each had three groundballs, while junior Kacy Koolage and Nieves both notched five caused turnovers.

Sophomore Gianna Falcone got the win in front of the net, notching three saves, while Barlow picked up six saves for Cabrini.

Salisbury is now set to take on Colorado College in a regional semifinal game on Saturday, May 21. The time and site for the game are to be determined.
