Men's basketball falls at St. Mary's, will close regular season on Saturday

Box Score

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 11 Salisbury University men's basketball team suffered an 85-73 Capital Athletic Conference loss on Wednesday night at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

It was a jumper from Gordon Jeter that opened up the game, just 14 seconds into the contest, and Salisbury (19-5, 14-3 CAC) took control early on.

Terray Quickley drove the lane for a layup and Jeter scored again after Wyatt Smith's steal set up Jeter on the fast break for a 6-0 lead less than two minutes in, prompting a timeout from the Seahawks (13-11, 8-9 CAC).

Out of the timeout, St. Mary's got on the board with a three-pointer from Matt Ayoub, but it was an 8-2 run for Salisbury that allowed the Sea Gulls to get the lead to nine points just four minutes into the contest. After a Chad Barcikowski bucket, Quickley hit from three and freshman Al Leder was fouled attempting one and connected on all three free throws for a 14-5 edge.

The Salisbury lead hit 12 points on a five-point possession from Barcikowski. He hit in transition and was fouled. Though he missed the free throw, Salisbury grabbed the offensive rebound, and the junior connected from outside off a Barry Bratten assist to make it 19-7.

Barcikowski hit two more times from outside in the first half to score 13 at the break and finished with a team-high 22 points in the contest to go with seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

The Salisbury lead topped out at 15 in the first 20 minutes, but the Seahawks were unwilling to go quietly, making a 16-2 run over the final seven minutes of the period, to get within two points at the break, 37-35.

The Sea Gulls made a run to start the second half to pull ahead. Quickley got the scoring started with a pair of free throws and a jumper less than two minutes into the half. He scored 11 points in the contest.

Salisbury held the lead through the first five minutes of the second half, but the Seahawks tied things up on a Tre Mouton three-pointer. A minute later, the home team collected its first lead of the game, 50-49, on pair of Donovan Robinson free throws with 13:29 on the clock.

The lead traded hands two more times, and the final tie of the night came with eight minutes left when Jordan Brooks made a layup to square the game at 58-58, but seven straight points from the Seahawks gave St. Mary's control.

A Mouton jumper capped the run for a 65-58 lead; it marked two of Mouton's game-high 23 points.

Salisbury got a bucket from Bratten before Brooks hit a contested three from the top of the key getting the deficit down to four points with less than four minutes to play, but it was as close as the Sea Gulls would be for the remainder of the game.

The Sea Gulls close out the regular season on Saturday, February 18 traveling to Frostburg State University for a 3 p.m. tip.
