Sea Gulls soar past Eastern Shore rival Washington College, 15-8

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's lacrosse team hosted eastern shore rival Washington College in a non-conference showdown Saturday afternoon, defeating the Shorewomen 15-8.

Senior attacker Kristen Murphy led the way for the Sea Gulls opening the scoring in the third minute of play after converting a solo effort from a defensive end clear by fellow classmate, Kayla Miller.

The next 16 minutes of play saw both teams battle in tough end to end play but the Sea Gulls started to pull away in the 19th minute as Dana King delivered a perfect pass to a cutting Gabbi Nieves to give Salisbury the lead at 4-2.

Both Salisbury and Washington College continued to exchange blows for the remainder of the half as six different Gulls tallied markers to give Salisbury the lead heading into the break at 6-5.

The Sea Gulls defensive unit gave a stout showing as they caused five turnovers, earned eight draw controls, scooped up six ground balls, and were perfect on clears in the half going 6-for-6.

At the half Salisbury outshot Washington 15-9, with Gianna Falcone notching four saves from nine shots in the opening 30 minutes.

King continued her scoring streak after tallying her second goal of the day sweeping past her defender to beat Washington College goalkeeper Haylee Solomon 5-hole to extend Salisbury's lead back to two, 7-5.

Following King's tally the Sea Gulls didn't take their foot off the gas as five different Sea Gulls found the back of the net increasing Salisbury's lead to six, bringing the score to 13-7.

The Gulls were relentless in their offensive pursuit as junior attacker Madelyn Manzoni opened her account for the maroon and gold after a beating her goal side defender and slotting a low corner shot past Solomon to extend the Gulls lead to seven, 14-7.

Kieran Kelleher, Margaret Lenz, Kacy Koolage and Kayla Miller displayed solid defensive poise throughout the stretch as the Sea Gull defense scooped up 12 ground balls, caused 10 turnovers and were near perfection on defensive clears, going 15-for-16 on the afternoon. Junior midfielder Allison Hynson's hard fought defensive efforts earned her a career game high six draw controls in Salisbury's victory.

Salisbury ended the contest outshooting the Shorewomen 25-22, with Falcone earning the win and collecting a career high 10 saves on the day. Freshman Skye Graham went 1-for-1 for the Gulls in her brief time between the pipes collecting a save for her efforts.

The Sea Gulls are back in action Saturday, March 18, as they head back out on the road to take on fellow Capital Athletic Conference foe The University of Mary Washington. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
