Men's lacrosse rolls to 25-5 CAC win over St. Mary's

Box Score

St. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team traveled across the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday afternoon to take on Capital Athletic Conference opponent, St. Mary's College of Maryland and defeated the Seahawks, 25-5.

The Sea Gulls (12-0, 5-0 CAC) got on the board first as Nathan Blondino found Carson Kalama for the opening tally of the game, but the Seahawks (1-10, 1-3 CAC) responded to have the game tied up four minutes into the conference matchup. Just as the Seahawks tied things up however, the Gulls got six goals in a row to close out the quarter. Brendan Bromwell got two in the six-goal stretch, while Kevin McDermott, Blondino, Troy Miller, and Adam Huber recorded single tallies.

The goals continued to pour in for the Salisbury offense in the second quarter, while the Gull's defense held strong. Salisbury outscored the Seahawks 6-0 in the second quarter to bring the score at the half to 13-1.

Salisbury had eight goal scorers by halftime with Nick Garbarino and Josh Melton getting their first of the day in the second quarter. Blondino and Bromwell were the offensive leaders for Salisbury after 30 minutes as they both went for three goals and two assists, followed closely by Kalama's two goals and two assists.

Colin Reymann had a stellar half with three saves (.750 save percentage) and got great help in front of him with the starting defense of Aaron Leeds, Will Nowesnick, and Kyle Tucker combining for eight groundballs and six caused turnovers, while Leeds and Nowesnick also notched assists in the half. Leeds ended the game one shy of his career high in caused turnovers with five.

The third quarter saw the Salisbury run of goals come to an end at 18 in-a-row after Steve Jones scored at the 4:22 mark of the third. The Sea Gull's defense had held the Seahawks scoreless for 27:48 minutes until that point. However, as the home side notched their second of the day in the quarter, Salisbury had put home its 20th.

Down the stretch of the fourth quarter, Salisbury got to empty its bench and see freshmen Griffin Moroney, Eric Ellis, and Robert Gothier all score, while classmates Pierre Armstrong and Melton both notched an assist. Salisbury outscored St. Mary's 5-3 in the final quarter to close out the win.

At the final whistle, Salisbury held the edge in shots 56-22 and groundballs 46-28. The team had four players finish with hat tricks in Bromwell (five goals and two assists), Kalama (four goals and three assists), Garbarino (four goals and one assist), and Blondino (three goals and four assists). Of the quartet with at least four goals, not one of them attempted more than six shots all game.

Salisbury is back in action on Wednesday, April 5 with a home game against Christopher Newport University. That CAC game is set for 7 p.m.
