Gulls upend Spartans to earn 17th CAC title

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Capital Athletic Conference No. 2 seeded Salisbury University women's lacrosse team took on the top seeded York College of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon in the CAC championship, defeating the Spartans 7-2.

The maroon and gold got out to an early lead on the Spartans as sophomore attacker Lindsey Wagner broke through the York (Pa.) back line converting her solo attempt giving the Gulls their first lead of the contest and Wagners 22nd tally of the season.

Following a host tally from Caitlin Rankin, Salisbury responded with a strike from junior midfielder Allison Hynson as she buried her streaking run into the fan off a laser pass from classmate Krissy Murphy, giving the Gulls their second lead of the game at 2-1 just 10 minutes into the contest.

A scant two minutes later Rankin collected her second goal on the day and eventually York's final tally of the contest off a free position shot to tie the game up again at 2-2.

The rest of the first half saw a tough, physical back and forth contest as both teams vied for the tally that could shift the momentum to their favor.

With time winding down in the half, Salisbury claimed that momentum with a mere four seconds left in the half in the form of junior attacker Dana King. Following a fast defensive break Murphy found an open King to give Salisbury the lead but more importantly the momentum heading into the half up 3-2 over their hosts.

At the break, the Gulls outshot the Spartans 7-6, with junior goalkeeper Gianna Falcone picking up two first half saves compared to Wrights three. The maroon and gold defensive line of Kacy Koolage, Kieran Kelleher, Marcy Lenz and Kayla Miller displayed their dominance as they collected six ground balls, earned three draw controls, caused seven turnovers and were near perfection on clears going 7-for-8.

At the start of the second half the Sea Gulls offensive unit carried Kings first half momentum throughout the rest of the contest as tallies from Murphy, Hynson, Gabrielle Mongno and Gabbi Nieves put the game out of reach for the Spartans. The victory marks Salisbury's 17th CAC championship and 14th title in a row for the Gulls.

At the end of regulation, Salisbury outshot York (Pa.) 14-12 with Falcone earning four saves and the victory, improving to 10-5 on the season. The stout Sea Gull defense didn't relinquish as they scooped up 11 ground balls, earned five draw controls, caused 12 turnovers, and were an impressive 15-for-16 on clears for the contest.

With the victory in the CAC championship, the maroon and gold earned an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament with location, dates, and times to be announced early next week.
