Gulls get up big early to defeat CNU, 17-5

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team welcomed Capital Athletic Conference opponent Christopher Newport University to Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday night and sank the Captains, 17-5.

The Sea Gulls (13-0, 6-0 CAC) got out to a 10-0 lead before the Captains (8-3, 3-1 CAC) got their first tally of the game. Carson Kalama struck first for Salisbury, burying a tight feed from Nathan Blondino just 57 seconds into the contest.

Blondino finished with eight points off four goals and four assists while Kalama added three goals on just four shots.

Kalama capped off the scoring in the first quarter as well, but not before Adam Huber scored one of his two goals in the game and Blondino got his first of the day. The second Kalama goal occurred as Andrew Ternahan stripped a CNU player and started the fast break by drawing the high defender before dishing it down to Nick Garbarino who one touched it over to Kalama for the easy marker. Garbarino had two goals and two assists at game's end.

Ternahan ended with a great day all around, coming away with five groundballs and three caused turnovers.

Josh Melton and Brendan Bromwell got their first of the day in the second quarter, while Garbarino, Kalama, Huber, and Blondino all tacked on additional goals. Just as it looked like Salisbury would go into the locker room up 10-0, CNU keeper Matt Hayden heaved a ball down field with time expiring and Will Geise corralled it and scored as time expired.

Despite the late tally, keeper Colin Reymann displayed some of his best lacrosse all season in the opening half. Reymann ended the day with 13 saves with 10 of them coming in the first half.

The Sea Gulls opened the third quarter by getting the period's first five tallies. The fifth of the run came as Bromwell received a pass from Garrett Reynolds on the low-left wing. Bromwell faked as if he was going to sweep over the defense with his left, but instead hesitated and stepped into a shot from 15 yards out. Bromwell snipped his underhand shot into the top-right corner to put Salisbury up, 14-1. Bromwell ended as one of three Gulls with a hat trick.

Following the Bromwell goal, CNU outscored Salisbury the rest of the contest, 4-2, including two goals with under five minutes to play in the fourth. However, the early dominance displayed on both ends of the field by SU took the wind out of any late Captain push.

Aaron Leeds anchored the defense with a career day, posting eight groundballs and four caused turnovers. Leeds' line mates Kyle Tucker (four groundballs and one caused turnover) and Will Nowesnick (five groundballs and one caused turnover) also had standout games.

Salisbury returns to CAC action this weekend on the road at Frostburg State University on Saturday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
