Sea Gulls weather storm, sinking Captains in conference play

Box Score

Newport News, Va. - The No. 13 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team traveled midweek to battle Capital Athletic Conference rival Christopher Newport University, sinking the Captains 14-12.

Following a slow offensive start and a pair of unanswered Captain tallies, the Sea Gulls responded in the 16th minute with a strike of their own as junior midfielder Allison Hynson gathered a pass from classmate Dana King and slotted a shot past Captain keeper Kaitlyn Ready to cut the lead to one just under the midway point of the first half.

The next seven minutes saw the hosts increase the lead to four as the Captains tallied three unanswered goals bringing the scoreline to 5-1 with just over six minutes to play in the half.

With just over five to play in the half, Salisbury rallied back in true maroon and gold fashion with a barrage of their own as King, Krissy Murphy and Ariana Maxwell found netting to turn the tables and take their first lead of the contest at 6-5 with 90 seconds left in the half.

As time wound down in the first the Captains mustered a response of their own as they carved up two additional goals to head into the break up one on the Sea Gulls at 7-6.

At the half, Salisbury held the edge as they outshot the Captains 14-13, scooped up eight ground balls while earning eight draw controls. Junior keeper Gianna Falcone and Ready both notched four saves in the opening half of play.

Salisbury's senior staff came out of the break ready and responded in the opening minute with a strike from senior midfielder Gabbi Nieves to level the contest for the third time at seven all.

The Gulls didn't take their foot off the gas in the following 12 minutes as Lindsey Wagner, Elaine Draper, Hannah Young and Murphy all tallied goals to help extend Salisbury's lead to 12-9, with just over ten minutes left in the contest.

The stout Salisbury defense continued throughout the game as Kacy Koolage, Kieran Kelleher, Kayla Miller and Marcy Lenz held the Captains at bay following a late minute offensive surge. The Gulls defense allowed only 22 shots, caused nine turnovers, scooped up 16 ground balls and were near perfection on defensive clears going 9-for-10 on the day.

At the end of regulation the Sea Gulls outshot the Captains 31-22 with Falcone earning seven saves in the victory and improving her record to 10-3.

Salisbury returns home on Saturday, April 8, for senior day as they host the Bobcats of Frostburg State University in CAC action. That game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
