Sea Gulls split doubleheader with Southern Virginia on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team split its first Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season against Southern Virginia University in a pair of games played at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. The Sea Gulls played as the visiting team on their home field in the games originally slated to be played at Southern Virginia, but moved to the Eastern Shore due to weather issues.

Game 1: Salisbury 5, Southern Virginia 4

The Sea Gulls trailed throughout the opener, but rallied in the late innings to come up with the win.

Southern Virginia picked up an unearned run in the first before scoring three more for a 4-0 lead through five innings, but the Salisbury bullpen held the Knights in check through the final four innings to secure the win.

The Sea Gulls did all their scoring in the final two innings, getting the first two runs in the eighth inning on a Jay Perry single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Simon Palenchar. Salisbury had three hits in the inning, and pitcher Jimmy Adkins, who came on in the fifth inning, worked a quick frame retiring the Knights in order to get the Sea Gull bats back to the plate quickly in the ninth.

Salisbury started the ninth with singles by Brad Keith and Justin Meekins before a hit batter loaded the bases. After a pitching change, Salisbury drew even with a Jack Barry bases-loaded walk and a run-scoring single by Jack Decker before Perry beat out a possible double-play ball which would have ended the inning, but was able to score Barry for the game-winning run.

Adkins worked 4 1/3 shutout innings to collect his first collegiate win, giving up just two hits and walking one while striking out five, including a called third strike to end the game.

Game 2: Southern Virginia 2, Salisbury 0

In a quick pitchers' duel that lasted just 90 minutes, Salisbury's Connor Reeves and Southern Virginia's Taylor Peterson owned the day.

Reeves went the distance for Salisbury, giving up just five hits over eight innings, while striking out a pair, but the Knights (9-8, 1-1 CAC) were able to get to him for single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, getting four of their hits in the two frames.

Peterson also worked eight innings, allowing just three hits by the Sea Gulls (10-6, 1-2 CAC), while giving up one walk. Salisbury put just one runner into scoring position against Peterson, while Kyle Canavan reached on a one-out single to center field against Jonathan Soto, who came on in the ninth inning to close the game.

Soto needed just three more pitches to earn the save, getting a ground ball which resulted in the final of four double plays turned by the Knights to end the contest.

Salisbury returns to Sea Gull Baseball Stadium on Sunday, March 25, hosting Gwynedd Mercy University. That contest is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
