Decker's two-out hit allows baseball to walk off with win against Wesley

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team came back to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, overcoming a one-run deficit to earn a key Capital Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday, 4-3, against visiting Wesley College at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

The game headed to the top of the ninth inning tied at 2-2 before the Wolverines (6-9, 0-2 CAC) got their only run against Salisbury reliever Connor Reeves, using a pair of hits to take the 3-2 lead. Reeves entered the game in the top of the sixth inning, giving up just the two ninth inning hits and striking out a pair over his four innings on the hill.

Salisbury (12-7, 2-2 CAC) responded in the home half of the ninth with a two-out rally. Justin Meekins singled on a soft line drive to left field with two strikes before Brad Keith drew a walk and Jack Barry was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

A balk by Wesley pitcher Cody Simet forced home Meekins to tie the game and the 1-and-1 offering from Simet to Jack Decker was sent on a line to right field, dropping for the game-winning single allowing Keith to cruise home.

The hit made Reeves a winner for a team-leading fifth time this season.

The run in the ninth marked Wesley's second lead in the game. Salisbury took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on the first home run of the year by Scott Ardoin – a solo shot – but the Wolverines scored single runs in the third and fourth inning to grab a 2-1 lead.

Will Gutekunst came up with an RBI single in the sixth inning, scoring Decker to tie the game at 2-2, setting up the dramatic final inning.

Ardoin finished the game 3-for-4 while Meekins and Decker each had two hits. Wes Whitlock got the start on the mound for Salisbury, giving up just five hits over five innings while striking out a pair.

Salisbury is back at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium on Saturday, March 31 hosting No. 11 Frostburg State University in a CAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
