Yanarella's 6-for-7 day leads Sea Gulls to pair of wins in Salisbury Softball Tournament

Box Score 1

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University softball team closed out play in the Salisbury University Softball Tournament with two more victories on Sunday, topping Clarkson University and Washington (Md.) College at Sea Gull Softball Stadium.

Salisbury 9, Clarkson 0 (5 inn.)

The Salisbury offense needed to do little to support junior starting pitcher Shannon Powell, who kept the Golden Knights (0-4) at bay throughout the Sea Gulls' first game of the day, giving up just three hits in her complete-game shutout effort.

Powell struck out a career-high-tying six batters in her third win of the year, allowing just two runners to reach scoring position and none advancing past second base.

Salisbury scored on its first chance of the day thanks to a heads-up play on the base paths by sophomore Dakotah Fraley. Fraley stood on second after reaching on single up the middle when Clarkson pitcher Sam Mennig threw a pitch in the dirt that got to the backstop, advancing Fraley to third, but with Mennig not covering the plate, Fraley never stopped, sliding into home for the 1-0 lead.

The Sea Gulls strung hits together in the third inning, with the first four batters of the inning getting on, including RBI doubles by Fraley and senior Annie Pietanza leading to three Salisbury runs and a 4-0 lead.

Five more runs came home in the fourth, highlighted by Kristen Yanarella's two-run double. Salisbury hit five doubles in the game including two each from Fraley and Pietanza, who each went 3-for-3 in the game.

Salisbury 10, Washington 3

Salisbury (7-1) got out to a 4-0 lead in the final game of the weekend, scoring three times in the opening frame, sending eight batters to the plate with the big shot a two-run single up the middle from Yanarella. The senior had a career day, going 4-for-5 with five RBI in the second game, and a combined 6-for-7 in the two games.

The Shorewomen (3-3) scored three times in the game's middle innings off Salisbury starter Brea Bishop, cutting the lead to 4-3, but a solo home run from senior LeAnne Collins and another run driven in by Yanarella gave the Sea Gulls breathing room in the sixth and four more tallies in the seventh inning, including a Yanarella two-run double, capped off the scoring.

Fraley also had four hits in the game, scoring three times, while sophomore Emily Allen was 3-for-4, driving in three runs.

Bishop, in her first career start, went the distance, scattering four hits and a walk, with two of the runs being earned and picking up her first win.

Salisbury will be back in action this Friday, March 9 hosting Lynchburg College for a doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m.
