Volleyball sweeps day two of Guetle Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Salisbury University volleyball team returned for day two of the Guetle Invitational on Saturday afternoon and walked away with a sweep, defeating the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, 3-0, and The Catholic University of America, 3-2.

The Sea Gulls picked up their first win of the day over the Bobcats (0-8) in three sets, 25-10, 25-16, and 25-10. Amanda Chew led Salisbury with eight kills, while Gianna Savarese and Jenna Hahn finished tops on the team with two blocks each. Hailey Dougherty was the leader in digs, with eight. Dougherty, Rachel Dubbs, and Darian DiMatteo finished with two service aces each.

For the match, Salisbury totaled 32 kills on 60 total attacks (.400) while Pitt-Greensburg finished with 10 kills on 60 total attacks (-.063).

In their second contest of the day, the Sea Gulls defeated the Cardinals (6-2) in five sets, coming back from a 2-1 deficit to take the match 25-10, 29-31, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12.

Chew once again led her team in kills, this time with a career-high 20. Savarese and Kate Shea recorded the only two blocks for the Sea Gulls, and Dougherty finished with the most digs, with 24. Dubbs led the team with two service aces.

Trailing by a set heading into the fourth, strong play by Chew helped the Sea Gulls (6-2) claw back into it. She notched five early kills in the set to jump out to a 12-7 lead. Chew got her sixth kill of the set late and Hannah Sullivan notched kills for the final two Salisbury points in the set off assists from Dubbs, who had a career-high 58 helpers in the game.

In the fifth set, Salisbury took an early 8-3 lead and despite the Cardinals cutting their deficit to two points, at 14-12, the Sea Gulls got an attacking error against the hosts to seal the victory.

Salisbury finished the match with 70 kills on 170 attempts (.247) while Catholic totaled 45 kills on 190 attempts (.058).

The team returns home on Tuesday, September 11 to host McDaniel College. That match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
