Salisbury drops narrow contest at No. 15 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team headed south on Wednesday night for a Capital Athletic Conference showdown at No. 15 Christopher Newport University, with the Captains claiming a 67-64 victory.

Salisbury (13-5, 3-4 CAC) held the lead throughout much of the first half, using a 7-2 run over four minutes to establish the advantage. Mike Ward accounted for four points in the run, while Johnny Fierstein's three-pointer covered the rest. The Salisbury lead topped out at five points in the opening half, but the Captains (16-2, 6-1 CAC) were able to take a 30-29 lead at halftime.

Fierstein led the way offensive for Salisbury with 13 points at the break to go with six rebounds.

After a few lead changes in the early moments of the second half, Salisbury put together an 8-2 run to open up a seven-point lead, 47-40.

The Captains were able to answer with a 13-2 run over the next four minutes, to regain control with a 53-49 lead just beyond the midway point of the second half.

Salisbury would get its deficit down to one point twice over the closing minutes, but could not draw even.

Along with Fierstein's 13 points, Ward scored a team-best 16 points, with six rebounds. Gary Briddell also added a 12 to the effort.

The Sea Gulls return home on Saturday, January 26, hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland beginning at 4 p.m.
