Skoglund nets hat trick as Salisbury tops Stevenson, 14-6, in season opener

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team started the 2019 season with a 14-6 win over visiting Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon.

The Sea Gulls (1-0) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back. Courtney Fegan got the scoring started on a feed from Alexis Strobel and later tallied her second goal of the afternoon to make it 4-0.

Holly Bowers joined Fegan with two goals in the game, the first of which came on an assist from Lindsey Wagner to make it 2-0.

Gabby Mongno also recorded two goals on the day, with the first coming on a free position shot to put Salisbury up 3-0.

Taylor Poore made it four Salisbury players with two goals apiece, recording her first midway through the opening frame to push the lead to 5-0.

The Salisbury defense held Stevenson (0-1) off the board until the 8:38 mark of the first half. Four different players caused two turnovers for the maroon and gold, including Carrie Hesen, who also scooped up a team-high three groundballs.

After the Mustangs made it 5-1, Bowers tallied her second goal of the day on an unassisted marker to push the lead to 6-1. Emma Skoglund then converted on a free position shot to give the Sea Gulls a six-goal advantage.

Stevenson got one back on another free position shot to make it 7-2, but Salisbury scored two more before halftime for the 9-2 lead heading into the break. Skoglund was responsible for both, giving her a team-high three goals in the game.

Wagner, who assisted on Skoglund's final goal of the first half, opened the scoring in the second frame to make it 10-2 before the teams started exchanging goals the rest of the way.

Mongno and Poore both recorded their second goals, while Strobel tallied one and Lydia McNulty capped the scoring to make it 14-6.

Skye Graham picked up the win in goal, making seven saves on 10 shots in just under 44 minutes of action.

Salisbury returns to action on Sunday, February 24 when it travels to take on Catholic University of America at 1 p.m.
