Draper notches game winner as Sea Gulls defeat No. 15 Catholic in overtime

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 4 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to earn a 13-12 overtime victory against No. 15 Catholic University of America on Sunday afternoon.

Elaine Draper provided the game winner with just 1:05 remaining in overtime on an assist from Gianna Demato.

The Cardinals (0-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game before Emma Skoglund got the Sea Gulls on the board at the 22:02 mark. Holly Bowers then made it 4-2 just 55 seconds later, but Catholic responded to make it 5-2.

The teams traded goals before Salisbury (2-0) was able to pull within one, 6-5, on one of Gabby Mongno's two goals on the day. The Cardinals were able to stretch their lead back to three, 9-6, heading into halftime, however.

Skoglund, who led the Sea Gulls with four goals on the afternoon, sparked a 4-0 run, which was capped off by a Lindsey Wagner goal on Alexis Strobel's third assist in the game. Wagner's goal gave the Sea Gulls an 11-10 lead, their first lead of the game, with 7:03 remaining.

Catholic regained the lead with two goals of its own, but Skoglund tied the game with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation as Mongno found her cutting across the middle.

Draper then notched the winning goal late in the first overtime period on a nice feed from Demato, giving the Sea Gulls the 13-12 victory.

Taylor Poore aided a defensive effort that limited Catholic to just three second half goals by causing four turnovers and scooping up two groundballs. Skye Graham made 11 saves in net to earn the victory.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, March 2 when it travels to take on No. 13 Washington and Lee University at 2 p.m.
