Gwin and Ferrara each net hat tricks as No. 2 Sea Gulls down No. 12 Lynchburg, 11-9

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The second ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team picked up a thrilling, 11-9, road win on Saturday afternoon over No. 12 University of Lynchburg. The Sea Gulls earned the win behind big scoring days from both Corey Gwin and Cross Ferrara as each netted hat tricks on the afternoon.

Gwin and the offense came out firing, netting three goals in the opening frame with Gwin scoring two of them. Gwin netted back-to-back goals in the final three minutes of the first quarter, one on man-up and the other at even strength, to give Salisbury (2-0) a 3-1 lead.

Gwin and Ferrara bookended the second quarter by scoring man-up markers to aid in a 3-of-4 effort for the afternoon. Gwin's third and final tally of the day came with 13:04 left to play in the second frame when he finished off a pass from Josh Melton to push the lead to 4-1. Ferrara netted his first of the contest with just under six minutes left to play in the half, finishing off an assist from Jarrett Bromwell to give the Gulls an 8-1 lead at the break.

Ferrara added two more tallies in the third, including his final of the day and Salisbury's last goal of the afternoon to push the score line to 11-2.

However, the Sea Gulls would have to outlast the Hornets (0-1), who used a five-goal fourth quarter to pull within two, 11-9. The defense managed to stand tall once more in the waning minutes, holding off Lynchburg as Brandon Warren made his seventh save of the afternoon with under two minutes left to play, allowing the offense to milk the clock and preserve the win.

Kevin Murphy led the defensive effort with seven groundballs and was one of five players to record a caused turnover. Meanwhile, Brett Malamphy won 12 of his 18 faceoffs.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, February 16 when it travels to Widener University. Faceoff between the Sea Gulls and Pride is scheduled for 1 p.m.
