Salisbury tops Hood with late-game comeback

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 22 Salisbury University baseball team rallied back in the late innings to defeat the visiting Hood College at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, 3-2.

The Blazers (7-3) scored first in the top of the third inning. After a passed ball advanced Dylan Beck to third base, teammate Daniel Shepherd laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to the left side of the mound that brought home Beck for the 1-0 lead.

Hood doubled its lead an inning later when Jordan Patterson sent a single through the middle of the infield to bring teammate Joe Kroeger home from second base.

Salisbury (7-4-1) cut its deficit in half in the bottom half of the fourth inning. After leading off with a walk, Tyler Mayo advanced to second on a Cameron Hyder sacrifice bunt before advancing to third on a passed ball. Jimmy Monaghan then helped his teammate finish his trip around the diamond when he sent a single through the left side of the infield to make the score 2-1.

The Sea Gulls evened the score in the bottom of the seventh inning. After reaching base on a fielder's choice and advancing to second on a muffed throw by Hood's second baseman, Brandon Bonesteel finished off his trip around the bases when Jay Perry sent a double into deep right field.

The maroon and gold battled back to take the lead for good in the bottom half of the eighth inning when Mayo was able to score for the second time on a Monaghan double into the gap in left center field.

Freshman Xavier Marmol, who pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief of starter Zach Amisano, came out in the ninth and secured himself and his team a win by forcing Hood's Shepherd to ground into a double play with runners on first and second base. Marmol's first career win at the collegiate level included seven strikeouts, no walks and five hits.

The team will turn around and host Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday, March 13. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
