Salisbury defense shines in 23-1 victory over Montclair St.

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The top ranked Salisbury men's lacrosse team accomplished a feat it had not achieved in two years on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium, as it held visiting Montclair State University to one goal, as the Sea Gulls cruised to a 23-1 victory.

The defensive unit was exceptional from start to finish as it forced 23 Red Hawk (3-3) turnovers while causing 13. The Sea Gulls (8-0) were led by a strong performance from junior Kevin Murphy, who posted a team-best two caused turnovers while also scooping up six groundballs in the contest. Overall, the defense had 12 different players register a caused turnover, while the starting defense of Brad Apgar, Drew Borkowicz, and Noah Kness combined for 10 groundballs on a day where Salisbury scooped up 52.

Junior goalie Brandon Warren, who was one of four goalies to see action on the day for the maroon and gold, was solid in his only half of play turning away four shots while allowing just one goal in 30 minutes of work.

It is the first time Salisbury has held a team to one goal since defeating Washington College 14-1 on March 11, 2017.

Offensively the home team saw yet another outburst as 13 players registered at least one point with Josh Melton, Corey Gwin, Zach Pompea, and Tyler Snyder all totaling a team-best five points each.

Pompea opened the scoring for the second consecutive game netting his only marker for the contest 50 seconds into the first quarter. Gwin pushed the advantage to 4-0 with 6:02 left to play in the opening frame before Montclair St. netted its only tally of the contest to pull within three by the quarters end.

However, the Sea Gulls used an eight goal second quarter to blow the game wide open that saw markers from four different players including three from Snyder and two from Melton. Snyder opened the second 15 minutes of action with a man up tally, one of two man up goals he would register for the contest, to push the lead to 5-1. Melton tallied his first goal of the contest just over a minute later and would find the back of the net again with just under 10 minutes to play before the half. Snyder capped his first half scoring, finishing off a Pompea pass to push the advantage to 10-1.

Both Snyder and Gwin each tallied an assist on the final two Sea Gull goals of the first half to give the hosts a comfortable 12-1 lead at the break.

The offense continued to roll in the second half as seven players found the cage including five players who registered their first markers of the season in Brett Malamphy, Bobby Kilian, Isaac Thrasher, Aiden Stephens, and Luke Harbottle. For Kilian, Thrasher, and Stephens they are the first goals of their collegiate careers.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, March 23 when it hosts State University of New York at Geneseo. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
