Baseball sweeps Lakers; Tuesday start time moved up

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 20 Salisbury University baseball team returned home on Saturday to host No. 15 Oswego State University in a doubleheader matchup between two nationally-ranked programs. The Sea Gulls were victorious on the day, sweeping both contests 3-1 and 9-2, respectively.

Game 1: Salisbury 3, Oswego State 1

The early game started fast and never slowed down, taking less than two hours to complete thanks in large part to strong performances by starting pitchers Clayton Dwyer and Nick Demarco. The two matched efforts, holding the game scoreless through the first 3 1/2 innings and combining to throw 16 innings.

It was Salisbury that struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Jimmy Monaghan led off the frame with a single to right field, Jack Barry followed up with his first homerun of the season, sending it over the left field wall to put the maroon and gold up, 2-0.

Oswego State cut into its deficit in the top half of the fifth inning on a two out RBI triple to right center field to make it 2-1.

The Sea Gulls took back their two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jay Perry sent a towering solo blast over the left field fence for his first long ball of the year.

Dwyer (2-1) was able to finish the contest on the mound, tossing 110 total pitches and striking out 10 batters for his first complete game performance as a Sea Gull.

Game 2: Salisbury 9, Oswego State 2

Salisbury (5-2-1) struck first again in the second game. With one out in the bottom of the third inning and a man standing at third base, Jimmy Adkins smacked a double into the gap in right center field to bring home the first run of the game. Adkins then swiped third base during the following at-bat before Brandon Bonesteel's single to right field sent him home to make it 2-0.

The Sea Gulls doubled their lead in the fifth inning. After the first two batters were able to reach base safely, a passed ball by Oswego catcher Lukas Olsson ricocheted across foul territory but stayed in play, allowing Cameron Hyder to advance two bases and score all the way from second. Tyler Mayo was also able to advance from first to third on the play before scoring Salisbury's fourth run on an Adkins single up the middle in the next at-bat.

The Lakers (0-2) cut into their deficit with two runs in the sixth inning, but a series of defensive mishaps in the bottom of the seventh inning put the game out of reach for visitors, as five Sea Gulls crossed home plate to open their lead to 9-2.

Salisbury starter Zach Amisano (1-0) earned the win, pitching five-plus innings while striking out six batters and allowing only one hit. Jason McDonough and AJ Korczynski also had strong performances in relief, combing to pitch four innings while striking out six total batters and allowing only one additional hit.

The team returns to action when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday, March 5. That game, which had originally been scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, has been pushed up one hour to 2 p.m. to account for daylight.
